Looking at my big lad yesterday and he really is skinny, despite being on good food and having had time off to allow a bit of rainscald on his back to recover.
Looking into ulcers at the moment, he is a candidate, worked hard(evented by pros) from a young age so likely stabled 24/7. Weaves and is stressy. Quite grumpy and getting more so. Impossible to keep condition on.
Other than that he is a very very poor healer.
So the other thing I would consider is an immune booster, but has anyone any experience of gastrogard or any ulcer treatment?
I believe you give it generally as a diagnostic, wouldn't go as far as scoping him as impossible with the vet.
Thoughts?

The only way you will get a diagnosis is to have him scoped..... they are sedated when this is done....

There is another gastro type supplement avaialble, as I know gastroguard is ridiculously expensive, but I cant remember the name of it...... will post when I remember, which knowing me will be about 4am!!!

Or try Coligone, had amazing results with my TB from using that

You can get Gastroguard on your insurance... I have quite a bit left from when the vets thought Grace had gastric ulcers before she was rolling around with colic. I was planning on having her scoped asap at Leahurst and go from there.

Coligone is fantastic for gastric issues, but if you suspect ulcers I would definitely recommend getting your horse scoped so you know how bad/good it is down there.

Really cant get him scoped, he is a vet phobic and needle phobic! Plus I dont think parents will listen to the suggestion of scoping, but I could buy an ulcer thing myself. He has never shown any signs of colic etc. it is the weight and weaving etc. that to me seem like it?

Oh I know the feeling when trying to talk your parents into getting things like that done

You can get a droppings test done that will show if there are ulcers though as it works by detecting blood in the sample I guess it won't show very low level ulcers. It does have the advantages of not stressing your horse & being cheap though!

My vets recommend Equine America's U Gard Plus following a course of Gastroguard or where they suspect low level ulcers but don't want to scope. One of them now uses it on her own horse because she found it stopped him needing more Gastroguard & I've had fantastic results with my cribber - hardly cribs now, eats much better, keeps weight on better (not necessarily a good point with an ID!) & far calmer in himself. I was very cynical because I'd tried so many others to no positive effect but now I wouldn't be without it.

I'm having my horse looked into fro Gastric Ulcers at the moment, on my vets recommendation and if she has them i'm told it's an insurance job as the treament for it cost £20 a day and she'll need it or 4-6 weeks. I would speak to your vet first and she what they recomend.
