I know years back gastroguard was the only product licensed to treat ulcers in horses and cost around £900
Is this still the case or is there now a real omeprazole alternative?

There are other licenced omeprazole products now available, marginally cheaper on prescription than GG. Ulcergold, peptizole and probably others.

There is also black market unlicensed stuff from abler

Ah ok, I was hoping that the prices would have come down significantly if there were several products available.
I don’t have time to import anything anyway!

Poiuystrewq - My abler arrived very quickly and no issues with importing. You can also buy from the UK, but this is much more expensive (but ALOT cheaper than GG!)

I don't know if it still is but peptizole did come in a bit cheaper & is also a bigger tube - if I remember rightly it contained enough to treat 700kg. Worth a look at prices on some of the reputable online pharmacies too as they can be cheaper even with a prescription.

I did find the Abler paste every bit as good but it takes time to arrive & is illegal though when mine was found - after ordering it for a long time - all I got for a first offence was a warning.

I have actually used Abler before when I thought a horse might have ulcers but didn’t want to scope (he’d have not coped shut in overnight with nothing even to eat, if he’d not had ulcers before he would have had after)
I’m hoping insurance will cover this but need to minimise costs incase they don’t

Just be aware that Aber is illegal to import, and also that even in the US where the drug laws are laxer it is unlicensed. When tested by the FDA, it didn’t contain the same amount of omperazole as it claimed to. Just because you can buy it, doesn’t mean you should, and be very aware that it might not be what it claims, and may even do harm, particularly to the liver if there is contamination.
