Well....not quite the report I had envisaged writing.....

Had the dressage on Saturday and he warmed up really well, but because he was going nicely we had left too long to warm up! Anyway, went over to the arena and went around it a million and one times, finally went in and did a really nice test. A thousand million billion times better than Hartpury and I was really pleased with how he went, even if our trot was a bit quick at times and our walk pirouettes were rubbish because I lost the outside rein on them both and therefore lost rhythm and connection. There was also some jogging and crookedness in the walk. But nothing drastically wrong and I think he made a very nice picture. Tor (who had very kindly offered to stay the four hours between her test and mine to help me) was really pleased and was convinced it would be in the 50’s........But apparently the judges disagreed with us and with each other (15 mark spread!)

Anyway we ended up with 64.7 which Matt and Emma (Jacks old owners) both said was rather mean! I was really disappointed with it as it was so much unbelievably better than Hartpury (which wasn’t even round in trot) yet they got such a similar mark. But whatever just confirms my dislike for dressage!!!!!!!!!! Although BOTH judges gave BOTH our canter ‘’serpentine’’ wiggle things sevens and one judge gave us sevens for both SI’s and travers’.

He passed the trot up fine – although the person before me was held, re-presented and then spun, so that was a bit nerve-wracking!!

The Show Jumping was up to height and very wide, but nothing overly scary and was riding really nicely so I wasn’t overly concerned and was aiming for a clear, but would be happy enough with 4 faults as that is what I seem very prone to at the moment with him! He warmed up really well, although quite strong and heady due to being sat in a lorry/led around the lorry park all day. Jumped number 1 really well, came round to the planks at two and a buried him slightly and they came down :( , jumped three, brilliantly through the treble at 4 and flew a parallel at 5. Didn’t get a good shot to 6 and I lost my reins slightly. And then I didn’t pick him up and balance him and he swung round the corner sideways to the triple bar meaning we were on such a miser and he launched from miles back and came down on the back rail. I rode the 5 strides to an upright literally on the buckle!! Popped through the 4 stride, 2 stride combo at 9 and 10 well and then the last to finish. So 8 faults and I rode like a plonker so really really disappointed. I was really hoping a clear, and if I’m honest definitely wasn’t expecting to end up with anything over 4 faults – serves me right doesn’t it! ;) ;)

So yeah....not at all at all as I had planned.

So then everyone is like, go and show them how it’s done on the cross country....well...bah.
Jumped one well, got a brilliant stride to fence 2

xc2-7.jpg

and then something very odd happened at fence 3 and he tried to jump very left and I had to yank him right so he didn’t hit the post and rails the other side. I think maybe he misjudged it and thought the post and rails was somehow involved in the fence. Not sure TBH. Next up was a log on top of a bank and then down the bank, curving line to a corner. It was causing concern as so early on but we popped nicely through that and then had a flyer at the hedge following it.

Hit the parallel back over the hedge quite hard but jumped the corner at 8 really well. Jumped the wall at 9 and chase fence at 10 well and then it was a drop into the wood, 3 strides to a skinny log. That was fine. Then a horrible fence – uphill to an upright, down a drop and then 3 strides up an insanely steep slope to a rail. We jumped left down the step so it wasn’t very pretty over the rail. Anyway gallop on to the bounce, 3 strides to wall and then 90 degree turn to a hedge. I have to say he did this combo REALLY well and gave a fab feeling over it......and then it went wrong. There was a log in the woods where you couldn’t see the landing because it was a drop and sloped away, he was very iffy about it and damn nearly stopped, but then jumped the drop wall at the bottom of the slope well. You then had to veer left so you were next to a stone wall before a sharp turn right to a skinny log on the edge of a lip so you couldn’t see the landing, you then went down the dip and up the other side over a skinny brush. We did something quite similar at Hartpury that he did very well. And I don’t know whether it’s because I was just really complacent that he never stops and because of hartpury etc. But anyway we didn’t have an amazing stride (but not awful either) so I sat up so he could figure it out and must have totally dropped him because he just stopped dead, like urgh no thanks..I clearly didn’t read the signs that he wasn’t having an amazing round and wasn’t feeling very confident about fences where he didn’t know where he was landing (the near stop at that drop log beforehand should have been a rather big clue....). So I was utterly gobsmacked...came round second time and jumped it....albeit not very prettily –

I didn’t kick on at all after this point as there was no reason to. Absolutely FLEW over the duck into the water and out over the rails.

Popped the palisade and log, flew the big V with ditch underneath and then popped the last. Ended up with loads of time penalties obviously!!

The V thing –

So so so so gutted, I cannot believe I stopped at a log....a glance off I can cope with but a plain stop. Geez I was not expecting that! Never once did I imagine something like that would happen and I guess that’s why it did..... Am still in such shock and so disappointed. It really topped off what has been such a letdown of a weekend, I went in with great expectations of me and my fabulous little supplejack....and I royally let him down!!! :( Really not the prep I thought I was going to have for Weston....

Also...this is odd....but my only two 20 pens with BE...have both been at Gatcombe (clearly that place doesn’t hold much luck for me!!)

On the plus side, maybe it’s given me a good kick up the backside (that I clearly need ;) ) for Weston where we WILL get that 50’s double clear ;) ;) ;) – One can dream....

Sorry an epic report, pretty much just consisting of me being annoyed with silly complacent self!

Anyway, thanks for reading. Chocolate, wine or whatever floats your boat if you read it all!!!!

Thankies :) :D :)

It's always the innocent looking logs that are hiding monsters, surely you know that by now? ;)
Either way, I'd still poo myself at the sight of those SJs, they look massive! And his dressage photos look good, were the judges marking everyone harshly?
Good luck for Weston, are you doing the JRN champs on him? :)

Tbh I think you did so well, not many people have the guts to go round a 2* and 20 pens really isn't that bad... It could be so much worse! Onwards and upwards so good luck at Weston! :) x

Sorry you're so disappointed but you have to put it behind you now and go for that 50s DC at Weston. I bet you and Jack can (and will) do it :)

Dressage = Meh! SJ = one of those things! XC = learning curve.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way but you and Jack are still a very new team and you have come a bloody long way in a very short space of time. Don't be so hard on yourself, sure you want to be perfect we all do, but may be you just need to reflect on how far you have come in the past 18 months!
Really well done, that trakenher picture is AMAZING!

Thanks for the well written, well illustrated report. I'm sorry you don't feel too good about your result. Honestly, to people like me it seems really impressive, to even complete at that level would be a dream come true for me! Like you've said, you've had a kick up the arse that will only help for next time. Best of luck at Weston, I look forward to reading another of your fab reports.

TBH I can see why you would be marked down dressage as he is very 'tight' looking and the same in a fair few of the xc photos, but looked like he finished well (with a longer rein!) and looks really happy int he last few photos.

Awwwww don't beat yourself up, I always find when I think I'm well prepared and in with a chance it alll goes wrong. I think you will have a mega time at Weston. If you fellt the dressage was better then it was irrespective of the mark so don't focus too much on that, and the jumping willl come back together again just in time. Good luck and cheer up chick :)

Thanks chloe, I hope so!!!!

Well it is hardly what I would call a bad result ...!

agree... don't be so hard on yourself, yes it is disappointing when you don't do as well as you had hoped to, but you are still quite new to this horse and this level and are doing very well considering that! you completed, and both you and Jack are sound and well, it's important to remember that after a 'bad' day.

well done and good luck for the next one! :)

My show jumping trainer would say 'the best thing you can do about it is forget it'. Move on and don't beat yourself up! Think about all the good parts of the day and how wonderful he was on the other parts of the course. I know it is harder when you feel like you have let them down.....they do not think like that! Pick yourself up and learn from your mistakes (if there were any!) and look forward to the next event. I think I need to practice what I preach! :) I can not wait to go as badly as you did at this level...it is my ambition!! :):) Sometimes I think we lose sight of how lucky we are and how well we really do. :)

you are clearly very dissapointed and i understand at 2* its a very serious level. The work and partnership you have with your horse mst be been fantastic to even get to this level. The dressage unfort is in the hands of the judges on the day and there is nothing you can do about that, the showjumping is massive, and two poles at that level also is ok,,, the xc who knows what goes through their heads, it was a log, but it could b worse he could hve a prob with water (which from the pics of the duck he very clearly doesnt)!! Hes a lovely chap and on that day you just had a blip, but to some, that result would be agood day, hehehehe! Try not to be too hard on yourself your a credit to him, and him to you!!

Remember that the judges can only judge what they see on the day and while it might be better to you it may not be higher mark earning. Maybe if you work hard on the rhythm, making it clearer, slower and more even in trot and with a more defined 3 beat and moment of suspension in canter, the straightness - 1/4s are right for much of the time - and more defined transitions so they are less progressive then the marks will improve. 15 marks in a test of 27 movements is not really so big a difference and, with 1 judge at C and the other at the side, their view and responsibilities are different.
The still photos of him jumping show him to be a bit tight in the neck which would make fences into space harder for him as he doesn't always take the contact forward and use himself. Remember the gag action of a universal tends to invert the jump making the effort to jump greater.

I would just like to add how much your less than perfect report is appreciated - so many people will only report when everything has gone according to plan and oh, guess what, I won!! Makes many of the people on here realise that they are not alone in being imperfect.

That said, you did extremely well with just your one stop, but you definately have the right attitude - perfection is the goal.

Wishing you the very best of luck at Weston.

aw chin up...its not exactly a disaster is it!
hopefully (and you've said this yourself) its all just a case of you being a bit complacent XC- the great thing about this is that you've had a wake up call and so at Weston you'll be totally on top of your game! hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we only learn and improve by making mistakes

i think you should be very proud of what you've achieved in a relatively short space of time with Jack. he looks awesome on the V trakhener thingy picture :D

how's Belv?

hey, thanks optimist and diggerbez.
and oldvic, interesting points/thoughts, thanks for the comment!!!

and belv is fine, just mooching in the field and his stable really till the end of the event season and then he is going to do some hunting and get back enjoying life :P :)
