Bert and I have gate issues

Does anyone have any tips or exercises to help us?

He will walk to the gate and he will rein back when not at a gate but when i lean down to open the gate he sees something much more interesting in the distance

could you get someone to help you by them holding him, and gradualy use the person less an less?

I think I might give that a go, we have tried blocking him in with another horse but he just has a hissy fit

May or may not work but you could try having some treats in your pocket and holding them for him to eat while you open the gate. It will keep his attention but you'll have to be clever to prevent him spinning around/to make him spin the way you want him to.
