Please can everyone check their gate posts bolts are cut off and filed. I brought in my retired tb yesterday to discover he had skidded into one and it pierced straight into him. He had torn himself off it leaving a deep puncture about the size of a middle finger in his chest.

Vets came within 20 mins and stitched his muscle back up and the outside flesh but the poor boy has to be on box rest for a least 2 weeks for the muscle to fix itself.

Just what I need before christmas! A large vet bill!

It had never occured to me before to even look out for this danger and unfortuanately I have learnt the hard way so please check as would hate someone else to go through what we did yesterday.

Similar thing happened to my friends TB last year, he caught himself on a gate bolt as he was walking through a gateway, ripped a huge hole in his shoulder and spent a week in horsepital and several weeks on boxrest, He is now recovered but wont ever be ridden again :(

I have seen pics of that kind of injury - horrible. Its one of my constant worries, that and feet in haynets, heads in bucket handles, legs in rug straps, choking on a carrott etc etc.
Hope he heals nice and quickly - the 2 weeks will fly by.

My friend learnt the hard way with a gate hinge.

Her youngster ripped open his shoulder , about the size of two hand palms and was stables for 6 weeks.

You now can not see where the injury was.

Since then we have had all the bolts sawn off.
