Hi everybody's always so helpful on here so thought I'd ask again, the gates into my horses field are two big solid black gates like driveway gates (much like these) http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mlgDx8t6IpFwu2n0UaZGNWA.jpg However the problem is I need to lock it from the outside as if I lock from the inside I'll have to climb over to get out. I currently have a hinge lock with padlock attached http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/437870/Zv66965.jpg but this isn't secure enough for my liking as the gates on the road and very easy to cut through the padlock or bar. If anybody has any ideas that'd be great as the gate opens straight into the field the hinge lock isn't my favourite as no matter what I do padlock or chain wise the bar of the hinge lock can be cut through. A bit stuck...

Are they wooden gates then ?
If so the obvious solution to me would be to put a high security mortice lock on them which would require the addition of some more wood where the two gates meet.
Whether you wish to go that far is debatable as all you can at best achieve with most security is to stop the passing intruder and slow down a determined one . To be honest if Somebody wanted to get in they would be, in under five seconds whatever lock you have on there.

Hi Thankyou they are wooden gates but they don't close like a door they close at an overlap (I don't know if that makes sense) but the kind where the left has to be closed first then the right. I'll look into that I don't mind doing extra it's just more so to deter and give me a better piece of mind.

Is the overlap actually the gate or a piece of wood on the front of one side IE the actual gates meet perfectly.

Could you not cut a hole in each gate where they meet so you can then thread a thick chain through the holes, thus joining the 2 gates together (making them harder to open) and then get a hefty padlock to secure the chain?

Sorry not a very good description I fear!

This actually makes perfect sense Thankyou, that's actually a smart easy enough idea Thankyou :).
