Gated enclosures - any advice?

Hi, I've got a bit of an emergency. I have an old horse arriving who will require overnight stabling. Unfortunately I do not have stables at present as mine are all out 24/7. I do however have a large concrete based barn which we are considering making into a makeshift stable using 12 ft gates to make a 12x12ft enclosure. The gates would be hinged to a steel beam running from floor to the overhead steel girders, plated at both ends and bolted in so that it can be dismantled at some point in the future. Two sides would be the walls of the barn and two sides would be gates.

We are thinking of facing the gates with thick sterling board to avoid problems with legs going through the gates but I am just wondering what height to set the gates. I've been advised to set them high but worry that a head or legs could become trapped when lying down/rolling. The other option is to set them very low but that would be a pretty low height for keeping him in. One other option would be to overlap the sterling board at the bottom to plug the gap. Has anyone any experience of using this type of enclosure?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

We use this sort of arrangement at PC camp sometimes.

Will the pony try to jump out, if not then as long ar they are about 4ft they should be OK.

We attach the board with cable tie, it seems to work ok

Stable doors are normally about 4ft high, so I'd work on that basis. Overlapping the board sounds like a good plan.

Years ago we used to keep the ponies in very similar 'stables' - with no board, just gates. We never had a problem

Had you thought of making the partitions out of large straw bales? Our YO has just done this in his barn with two rows of bales and one small gate. I'd still 'face' the gate with some ply/board and probably set it between 12-18" off the floor if the horse is big
