I'm looking to get myself a new skull cap (had to give mine away as I couldn't stand the heat!) - I have a champion ventair (with peak ) for daily use, which fits well and keeps my head cool - so I'm quite tempted to get the non-peaked version for XC but would like to hear what others think of similar ventilated skull caps before I get one of these incase there's a better/safer option out there - it would obviously need to pass the relevant standards.

I've heard some good things about the Gatehouse HS1 but never seen one to try - is this a similar fit to the ventair or quite different? And how cool is it to wear? Thank you! x

just check they meet the right safety atandards, i was trying to choose between one and a charles owen, ended up with the co as im sure had higher standards

I have one and love my HS1. Only ridden in a borrowed ventair once and it's a similar fit. It's a very comfy hat, I don't have a problem with overheating in it.

Not sure about now a days but previously the HS1 had the highest rating in the UK as was the only hat to have SNELL rating

I have one, they're quite a different shape to Champions though so if you fancy buying one make sure you get it fitted. I do find it fairly hot, although that said I've never yet found a hat that I don't feel hot in!

Re safety standards, they are made to SNELL standard which is the highest currently available:)

They hurt my head, crush the temples, I must have wrong head shape, can only wear mine 30 mins then have banging head ache. :-(

I'm now on my second HS1 and love it - when I bought my first one, it had the highest safety ratings of all the ones I looked at/could get hold of. My first one got binned after I was sent headfirst into a metal pillar in an indoor school - consensus was that I wouldn't have walked away in most other hats  the hat was dented inside when taken apart, and the outside had cracked - and I didn't even realise I'd hit my head as my shoulder hurt... Wouldn't have anything else now :)

I still have a peaked Champion for dressage as I just don't think skull caps look as smart but it only comes out for comps!

Wouldnt be without my gatehouse skull, i love it, and it is one of the safest on the market, i have a gatehouse velvet hat for sj and dressage again, high quality of hat and comfy

I have one and love it! It did give me a headache to begin with but I put that down to that I had a really old hat that didnt fit before it. Now it doesnt hurt at all and im really happy with it x

I just bought one with my christmas money and absolutly adore it! I'm usually a 54/55 but when i went to try them on i ended up getting a 56.. after wearing it around the house for the day I then decided it was too tight, so went back and got the 57. a couple sizes bigger than usual but so comfy,so guessing they just have small sizes. I used to have a champion which I thought fitted but after getting a HS1 which is much rounder,i realised my champion was actually far too oval.

ime you will either fit the HS1 or the Ventair - not both, they are totally different shapes. I wanted a HS1 but it killed me, so uncomfy, so I went for the one with the next best safety rating... the Champion Ventair Skull ;) Im on my 2nd also, love it!

Try hs1 and if you find one is tight try another in the same size, as they are hand finished there can be some difference in the same size. I'm on my 2nd hs1, they did change the shape not so long ago and yes my me hs1 felt tight and I almost didn't buy it but a reputable fitter fitter assured me of a good point that first time fresh on is the tightest it will ever be. I had it on for 20 mins whilst I browsed the shop (weirdo I know) and sure enough it fitted better. Now it's bedded right down it is spot on.
