The advert for the coloured cob currently showing on my screen says that the horse is gay. I've never seen that in an advert before and had to read it twice to make sure I hadn't misread it. Is that not a weird thing to mention?
 
That made me laugh a lot.

The way they just casually inserted "He is gay" wasn't something I was expecting. I'm guessing they mean he's a happy horse.
 
I just read it and couldn't stop laughing. I wondered whether someone had been having a laugh at the advertiser's expense (like a teenager) and slung that bit in. I can't imagine that someone would write their horse was gay (as in happy) these days. Nor say that he was actually gay!! Hilarious!!!!
 
I hope that 1) they checked that he was happy for them to reveal his sexual orientation in the advert before doing so and 2) that it doesn't put anyone off buying him, because that's discrimination.

How do they know he's gay? Did he fill in one of those workplace forms when they got him, or has he been arrested for unsanitary behaviour in a public loo, or are they basing it on his penchant for fashionable rugs/tack and interior design?*

*all of the above being stereotypes of course, but I find it rather amusing to poke fun at sterotypes.
 
In my experience most gay horses are unfairly labelled, having been turned out only with geldings... any port in a storm, as they say.
 
I cant find the advert so cannot see the context but..

In chicken breeding a chicken that is white and one other colour can be described as 'gay' when the white is the predominant colour by some way, could that be what they mean? 'Eg: I like that mottled Pekin hen but she is too gay to be show worthy'
 
I'm not sure what they meant exactly and will probably never know unless someone is brave enough to contact seller!! I was just amazed to read it as a seemingly throwaway line in a description which otherwise seemed very sensible.

Think it's been taken out of the ad unless I'm just too tired to read it properly. I hope it was a prank - it just makes it so much more funny!
 
You're right SA. It has now been taken out. I guess it was someone on here who is advertising and who read my post. I rather liked it too but it was a bit on the strange side since a horse's sexual orientation probably isn't at the top of most people's 'facts they want to know when choosing a horse'. Hope I haven't upset anyone. I had no intention of doing :o
 
Just got back into my chair! But hey, I'm gay most of the time and sometimes waver between moderately happy and plain old content rarely sad but have moments of blue which I can easily snap out of. Just normal I guess.
Probably a great illustration of what happens when being anthropomorphic with animal behavior. ( i have had trouble spelling from a young age) lol.
 
My horse definitely swings both ways, but I wouldn't think it relevent in an ad! Though you never know; someone may connect with an LGBT horse.

That's a good point. Personally where breeding hormones are concerned I think all animals have "gay" traits. My mare was only interested in her favourite girlfriend on day 1 of her season but after that the boys got the come-on. Who hasn't seen cows mounting each other when they are bulling, and bull calves doing the same as their sexual drive develops? You only have to see what goes on in single-sex prisons to know that as another poster has said, "any port in a storm".
 
Anthropomorphism again. Animals of the same gender mounting each other is a display of dominance or frustration not sexual orientation.
 
In the good old days, horses were often advertised as 'a gay ride' which then I took to mean they were a bit on the lively side. These days however, I guess that phrase would have a whole new meaning which I cannot guess at - I'm nearly 60, so I really can't, no i just can't!
 
I'm staggered, Is this a theory or has it been proven? I honestly would have thought survival of the species would be the most pressing thing, Bovine or Equine don't get a lot of leisure time to use sex for recreation as humans do.
 
It's well documented and proven in great apes and cattle, I know that much and am aware of various other studies with other species but haven't looked into them too deeply. I don't think anyone's suggesting animals use sex 'as humans do' but same sex 'couplings' don't appear to be purely about dominance etc. Cows show physical signs of orgasm when they mount each other and it's thought that the female-on-female action plays a part in demonstrating to males (perhaps from long distances in the wild) that they are cycling.
 
Wow this is news. I read 'gorillas were my neighbours' David Attenborough, i think, Also studied the Borneo Pigmies many years ago and learned that human inhibition towards bodily functions in animals introduced taboo's upon which society is modeled. But we are not talking about Gay love are we. That would be Anthropomorphic. This is behaviour within the confines of the species for the propagation of the species, as you say, to demonstrate to males readiness to reproduce. And of course if he's upwind he's protecting his girls? or being dim. But male on male has to be base dominance. Just as dominant male would cheerfully cripple the subordinate in the presence of a predator, or scratch his back to demonstrate reassurance when no threat was present.

I don't see how semantics are relevant here. Everyone knows what is meant and same sex relations does occur in many animal species.
 
Help I'm Drowning! If a Stallion or a bull or a dog mounts another it's not sex He's just going through the motions or committing a terrible fo-par or making a statement, the mounted has got to be too old or weak to be bothered or willing to be subjugated or waiting his turn not to have sex. Doesn't make either gay. Groucho Marx said it so well 'Outside of a book a dog is a mans best friend, Inside of a dog is too dark to read' Is there an animal behaviorist near by?
