I've never been to the pyramids, I may be out of date (and really hope I am) but I was under the impression that the welfare of horses and donkeys (and camels) there was still awful. A quick google show several charities operating in the area to help, and news articles about conditions of working animals there.

It seems all kinds of wrong that the GCT is going there, to jump ££££ horses for ££££ prize money a few hundred metres away from such awful welfare. I'd love to think some profit from the event would be channelled into the local animal welfare efforts. No idea how to go about suggesting it, but maybe if enough of us email the GCT to suggest it? info@globalchampionstour.com

Anyone got any other ideas? Or maybe can point out something blindingly obvious I've missed (although I've just read the press release on the GCT website and there's no mention)?

I think it has the potential to do good, but the thought of a bunch of super rich people descending on the area with their multi-million pound horses, having a tiny impact on the local tourism industry and then leaving everything in just as bad a state is quite jarring to me.
The welfare concerns in Egypt are very valid, this could provide a great opportunity to try to improve things by leaving some better infrastructure behind and through educating people about the plight of the working animals.
