Gelatine for hooves

Yes my blacksmith told me not to bother with expensive hoof supplements and feed my old horse with a spoonful of gelatine for his poor hooves. I did it for quite some time - first making it up and then just putting it straight in his feed. I think there was definately some improvement - bit worried I might give him Mad Cow Disease though!! Dear old boy is now passed away (my horse not the blacksmith) and my current horse also has rubbish feet but I have found feeding her Baileys Low Cal balancer has really improved them.
 
Not sure i would feed my horses Gelatine.

Blue has Rubbish feet, but still wouldn't feed him that. Our two liveries feed it to their horses... but our vet's said in the past not to.
