Gelding a Four Year Old - Can you share your experiences?

I have decided to Geld my 4 yr old westphalian.

He has generally been a good boy to back and is obedient, but has started to bite at every opportunity; i believe to assert his dominance over me, but it is starting to become dangerous.

So we have decided to Geld him, but I wonder if anyone has any experiences / tips to share with me on the subject?
 
I've had a 3yo and a 7yo old gelded. Both had covered mares and generally had stallion behaviour. After being gelded they were just like any other gelding and they went out with my 4 mares together, no problem. When the mares came into season they did not act like stallions either.

Only downside was that when entire they used to pile their poo up and after gelding they stopped and pooed like every other horse...........everywhere

Claire, your post made me properly laugh out loud! How very true, perhaps somebody can tell me why geldings can't be so tidy?!!

Do stallions pile their poo up? The reason I ask is I find it hilarious that my gelding piles his poo up in the field as had no idea it might mean something else - he was gelded late (3+) and is quite dominant. I've had him checked for being a rig - came back negative.
 
We had a Welsh D on free livery for 6 months from a few weeks after he was gelded at 4 years old. he had been used at Stud. he was absolutely wondeful. I also had a Welsh A who I discovered had been gelded at 4, he retained a larger neck but he looked fab.

My horse piles his poo up too. He was gelded late, is dominant and likes the ladeez. I can see a pattern with late gelded horses.
