Hi just wondered how long it takes for a pony to settle down once it's been gelded, I'm thinking of buying a 3 year old welsh sec a that's not been gelded yet and owner will consider doing it there, but he will be kept on livery yard with mares and he needs to behave himself, his field is not near any mares but stable will be, anyone got any experiences they want to share

mine was in for a couple of hours while the sedation wore off and then he went out in a small paddock. vet said he would be better moving around. he was only 8 month old though.. it may be easier if theyre younger! should be fine though, its not a big procedure

If he comes onto a mixed yard immediately after gelding, he will be a PITA when mares are around him. It takes a good couple of months before the hormones settle down, especially in a 3 year old. Would you have the option for him to stay out with another gelding for that sort of timescale?

Global Herbs Rig Calm definitely helps.

Has he been used for breeding?

I had mine gelded as a four year old after breeding from him, and although he was quiet to turn out with mares after about a month, he will still cover them when they come into season. He will probably continue to do this all his life as it is learned behaviour.

He has never been used for breeding and yes he could go out with my two geldings, he has never been handled so might take a while to get him in the stable as far as I'm aware he is not living with mares at all so I'm worried wat he will be like once freshly gelded being in a stable surrounded by mares

My new forest was done 6 weeks ago and this weekend we're going to introduce the mare into the field which should be interesting. The actual op is fine (had my TB done last year) mine have been done in the field (needs to be dry but not too hot because of flies) only takes 30 mins then just need to watch for a little while for anaesthetic to wear off, Echo (TB) walked like a cowboy for week or so as very swollen but little Archie (New forest) healed really quick.

No experience with gelding, however my 3yo stallion is in the same situation as yours will be. He is turned out on his own, however has company from 2 geldings in the field next door. He is also stabled with my 2 mares. They aren't able to touch noses at all, or get near enough to each other to 'blow' at eachother. He is very well behaved with the girls, never covered a mare before either. He will walk past the mares in their stables/field happily, however he does wear a chiffney as he can be very strong (and I am only little :D)!
I think as long as you are always (and know you are always) in full control, you will be fine with him until his hormones settle. Obviously making sure no mares are tied up or hanging around when going to and from field/stable which he could freely get to if he decided he wanted to!

I don't know whether you are planning on taking him to the vet, or having the vet come to him, but either way the vet will advise you to turn him out and allow him as much exercise as possible after the operation.
Keeping him in will increase the swelling and chance of bloodclots and infection afterwards!

Just something to bear in mind.

It can take a few months for the hormones to leave the system, and if he moves to your yard, it is possible that he "might" be quite difficult to handle, expecially as you say he has barely been handled, is young and everything will be new to him. Ask your vet for advice.

Are you sure about buying him? He has good points? I think you should realistically plan that he is going to take time to settle down and behave nicely.
