Hi, I bought a Gypsy Cob last August who was supposed to have been weaned and gelded, handled and fed end of September. Well two months later and I'm still waiting, due to them being 'very busy'! Now I have been told he will be taken from his Mum next Friday,(totally unhandled or fed) gelded and delivered to me on the same day! This seems a little extreme to me, surely he should be kept to recover, to make sure there is no infection and of course he could get colic once delivered to a strange place. Or am I worrying unnessesary? Any advice would be welcome please. Thanks all.

He seems a little young to be gelded, although some colts testicles have dropped at 8 months. Usually they are a little older. It's also unusual to not have handled a foal until weaning as taking him away from his mother can be hugely taumatic even for foals that have been well-handled, double so for this poor young man. Are you sure you really want to take an unhandled, traumatised, colt on?

No you are quite right to be concerned, I think it is better that he has been with mum for a longer time, but if he was purchased as weaned and handled, then he should be, you can ask for a refund on the gelding part [£200] personally I would just ask for a total refund and ask them to ring you in six weeks time when he has been handled, they have had plenty of time, it takes ten minutes per day to handle and feed, and is something most breeders love doing.
Re weaning, it can be traumatic a and is best done at a breeders yard where there may be nanny mares and other foals.
Again, the testicles need to have dropped before he can be cut, I don't know how they could ever guarantee a gelded colt straight off mum.
PS there are hundreds on the market at around £200! and many will be handled, though few gelded. I would NOT accept the colt on your yard as then you have the problem and they have the cash...........fait a complis!
PS I think that in general purchasers pay a deposit to hold the foal till weaning, it is not usually to pay out the full value, but if this is so, they have not fulfilled the contract and therefore you are entitled to your money back, morally and legally

Hi, Thank you for your replies. The foal hadn't been weaned when I viewed him, but was to be weaned at the end of September, then handled, fed etc.payed for him, gelding and delivery, was to be sent pics until delivery, which never arrived but kept being promised. I made arrangements to see them last week, but surprise surprise she wasn't there, saw the foal still with mum! I was told, since after I emailed her last week, that he will be taken from mum, gelded and delivered Friday! This was I thought a very good yard, and maybe they are, but I am just concerned for him with it all happening on the same day. She also knows I cannot take a colt where he's going. If this had all been done when promised there wouldn't have been a problem. Taking an unhandled colt is not a problem for me, but is for the yard, or I could have brought him home and had him done later.

I think you need to think about this very carefully.

No reputable breeder would do what these people are doing.

Colt should have been gelded on mum (this time of year is actually a very good time to do it), left to recover for at least a fortnight and then be available for collection, providing he's recovered well.

To do what they are suggestiong sounds very shoddy.

Have to agree.

I am not happy with the situation and was wondering if I could actually ask for a full refund. I paid them their deposit in Augustof £50 then they asked for full balance two weeks later, plus gelding money and delivery! I was shocked to find him still unweaned and was wanting to ask for a refund but knowing my luck, I wouldn't get one! I paid £500 for him and in total £800, what are my chances do you think, can I demand? They also said they should by rights be charging me rent for him!!!! Can you believe that? Lol

They haven't fullfilled their contract with you - so yes, I'd say you could ask for a refund. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

However, you should never have paid the full amount prior to collection etc. That was niaive.

I would ask them to arrange gelding this week - and then ask that he's kept with his mother for another two weeks (minimum). Weaned, and then you'll collect him after Christmas.

Tell them you will want confirmation that the gelding has taken place, and the weaning. And that you'll expect to visit him within the next month to confirm that all this has taken place, and that he's doing well.

What arrangements have you in place for when you collect him - company etc.??

Thank you, yes it was very silly of me, you'd think I'd learn at my age!! They are a big Gypsy Cob place and trusted them! I will do what you have suggested but just know I'm in for troubled times with them, they will insist on livery no doubt, which I won't agree to. I have owned horses for most of my life and any needing gelding was always done at home. I am now in a lovely livery yard where I keep my Andalusian boy, the foal was to be turned out with 3 fillies of around the same age. Still too trumatic for him, I am so disapointed with the place, they seemed like such nice people as well!

Ask for your money back, all of it, then start again. Local Trading standards can deal with this for you, as they are a business, not just someone with a mare in a field. They know the game is up, make it clear you will not pay any livery and that in fact they should be paying you for contract unfulfilled.
But keep pressing till you get the money back, you paid for something which they have not given you.
