so im on a very small " yard" - field rented from elderly gentleman with basic stables.

theres a lady who is VERY laid back in her care of her horses, she has a 2yr old colt, who after being a menace for the last year , she had gelded last monday.

im after some advice as im a little concerned for the poor chap, after he was gelded they kept him in for 48 hrs, then have turned him out into a small paddock- hes out for around 8 hrs then stabled.

hes VERY swollen, to the point it appears quite difficult for him to pass water

so my question is how swollen should he be post op??

im concerned as the vet wont be revisiting unless they call him back.,and im not sure that they will, i dont wanna mention my concern to them unless i have good reasons/fact to base it upon.

Ideally he should be out as much as possible, the last one gelded here was a 3 year old, he stayed in the first night then was turned out 24/7 the next morning, he did swell but the constant moving kept it down so never got too bad.
He should be comfortable enough to pee but if in so much it could continue to swell or may be infected poor chap:(

It is difficult as not really your place to interfere but possibly suggest that turning out all the time would be more appropriate and what is usually recommended.

I'm not sure but I seem to remember reading that after gelding they are best turned out as there is less risk of fluid build, generally I don't think there is usually major swelling, I think if it were mine I'd want a vet to see him as soon as possible, hopefully you'll get lots of good advice from those that have had their colts gelded.

even being turned out unless he is moving about which is very doubtful if he is sore he needs to be led out at least x 2 a day for at least 30mins, i hope she is giving him some bute, advise her that if he cant pee then there is possibly some infection and he will ofcourse die unless it is treated because his penis will drop off if it swells it wont be able to be retracted, please get her to wake up, i am so fed up as is so many other people hearing how others are so carefree about their horses welfare.

Good for you for taking notice. Call the vet out for her and if she complains tell her either that or you get WHW involved.

thats how i feel about interferring, which is why i feel a little out of order asking, as i by no means am an expert, i hadnt really thought it anything odd, til i rode out with a friend from my next door yard ( whos yard borders ours closely) who commented on how swollen and uncomfortable the poor boy seemed. which then made metake a closer look

Sounds like hes swollen from standing in, best thing is to leave him out as much as she can. Im surprised she wasnt told to turn him straight out, if shes worried a quick call to the vets should put her mind at rest.

should also say i know hes on a ten day course of antibiotics, which makes me more concerned, as hes so swollen even with this medication!

ive had to bite my tongue on so many occasions over her "relaxed" attitude to horse care.

So when i got up the yard this morning , he's stood in overnight, there's a river of urine running out of his stable running red from passing blood as he wee's . This can't be right?? I saw the colts owners husband and told him I thought he needed a vet and surely shouldn't be passing blood- he told me he just needs more time to heal?!
