Hello people,

It's now been 7 months since my old girl was PTS and I'm starting to feel ready for a new horse. There is one that I am very interested in. He's a big ID colt. He is pretty much everything I want except that he still has his balls at two years old. All the youngsters I've previously had were gelded at around 9 months. I plan to have him gelded asap if I buy him as he will have to live out with my mare. What I need to know is, is he going to cause me trouble? Will he bother my mare? He seems a pretty laidback character but will this change when he sees my pretty mare? She doesn't want a sex pest as a field mate even if he can't complete the job!

It depends on the horse. I had one gelded at 2, one at 4 and a friend had one done at 5 and none of them bothered mares. On the other hand I had one that I bought as a gelding who'd been done years earlier who was forever mounting mares.

My boy was gelded at 4 or 5. He’s the horse on the yard that you can toss in with anyone and he’s never sniffed at any mares and lived out with foals at his previous home.

It's sort of...random. Mine was gelded at 1.5 yrs old and you can toss him out with anyone. However, there have been horses gelded younger than him that will mount and/or otherwise obsess over mares. I've seen quite a few gelding and made combinations work though, so it seems to depend on the individuals. It's also possible that the mare (not yours specifically) is the sex pest.

As long as he's not already rather "studly" it might work out fine. I got a bit nervous when mine was with one other mare for awhile, but they never got attached at all.

Most likely not. I have all my gelded at about three sometimes four, I have the space and they are turned out with geldings. I have had them in with a mare when they were young entire and the ones I had never bothered, but you can not gaurantee it.

No, not too late at all. I have 2 young geldings here, one is bit of a prat with his sister, but she tells him off. He was gelded before the other boy.

Not too late at all IMO, I've known plenty gelded later that were absolutely fine. My old boy was gelded at 5ish and had sired a foal, he's absolutely fine turned out with mares.

Another way of looking at it is if he's been left longer, he may not been particularly coltish or difficult to handle.

My tb was 4 before he was gelded. He was fine and didn't even seem to notice mares for years. He did seem to hit puberty at 12 though and suddenly develop an interest.

ok you have the cost or they will do it before you buy.

I was going to keep my boys bits to breed from him, but when he got too much to handle and he was eating the donkey, and mounted her and flattened her. I said right that i it one more time and they are off. Needless to say they came off, aged 2 1/4, made no difference to his age he was my boy my main man. No issues what so ever cutting late.

My 6yo gelding lives with 2 mares and was gelded at 2. He's fine (wouldn't dare put a hoof out of line!)

My old gelding was cut at 9 and again never had an issue.

Next doors donkey was done at about 9 months and mounts anything in sight 🙄

My two geldings were both done at 4 - my homebred had one cryptorchid - he wasn't a nuisance so we left him as long as possible to let it drop. My ex-racer was very well bred, so they kept him entire until he proved he was never going to be a decent racehorse. Gelding didn't improve so him, so lucky me :) Both live with my daughter's mare, and other mares before that, and even though she is a right hussy when is season, neither care at all.

Depends on temperament. Recently had my chap gelded at 3 and he’s a little dude, but he was with his balls on too. I was told my other boy was gelded at just over a year due to being a bit of a handful & he still seems to think he’s got something to shout about down there occasionally 🤦‍♀️

Just an as example of how random things can get - one of mine was gelded at 8mo, as he already started mounting mares. He STILL tries to do it...at 6yo. No, he's not a rig.

My old Sec D was gelded at 2. He could be an arrogant, bolshy d******d around humans but that was just him, nothing to do with being gelded late, he was turned out with mares and geldings and was one of the quieter ones in the field.

My friend’s ID x cob was gelded at 4 and had covered mares before that. He’s bottom of any pecking order he’s ever been in and is like a puppy to handle. The biggest problem she has with him is him trying to groom her back when she’s brushing him.
