Gelding biting mares knees?

Ok, so our 16hh mare is in season. She was in the small paddock with 2 geldings, no problems. Then I took D out and left her with the 13hh oldie (17/18yrs).
Now, he got very excitied ('ahem!') and started squaling, huffing and puffing, no attempts at mounting, but was letting everything hang out, and then he started biting her knees? She was nearly falling over but not trying to get away (or defend herself?) .
Naturally I got sister out to bring her in (I had pone in sandschool in lungeing/long reining gear). But is this normal??
 
lol, that was my thought but never seen this happen before!
They are separate thankfully, she's out with my lad who is not interested, she had to be dragged away and is now pacing up and donw the fence line looking fo rhte little un! Hussy!
 
Could just be playing?

My two New Forest fillies used to do this to each other - the biting the knees bit I mean!!
 
Really? Very odd, don't think she could reach his knees, she just seemed a bit bemused! while trying to avoid falling on her knees. Just seemed very odd to me and wondered was it stallion-like behaviour (although he is definitely not in anyway inclined!)
 
It is a dominance thing. In the wild stallions fight like this to try to destroy the tendons of their opponent. Many horses will play like this but less aggressively.
 
my gelding does it to my little mare..she is 30 and still a right little madam...flirts with him all the time even shuves her bum in his face...she even waits for him to charge at her so she can give out a good playful buck....! would of thought by now she would of calmed down...cant imagine a 80 year old granny going after a 18 year old lad...! yuck
