Last night my poor 17 year old mare was mounted by a rather large gelding. He has managed to cut open the insides of both her back legs and her girlie bit is very red and swollen. I have spoken to the vet and they are coming out. But why has this gelding done this? How can it be prevented? In our herd there are five geldings and my mare, then yesterday two new mares where added to the herd, one of which is in foal. I've been around horses for the last 18 years and i have never seen this before. They are in a big field, with huge amounts of grass. Any Ideas? x

I think you've answered your own question. A new mare in the group smelling quite different because of her pregnancy hormones has kick started one of the randier geldings into action. Almost certainly the in-foal mare will have seen him off so he's gone for the known mare, your girl, and she's been powerless to fend him off. Some geldings just like the mares whether in season or not. He may have mounted your mare in a half hearted way many times before without you knowing anything about it. But new mare + sex-related hormones = big-time raping! You might also find that the new in-foal mare has affected YOUR mare and her battered bits are because SHE was begging Mr Hot Stuff for sex! In any event, your girl might need a bit of help keeping away from Mr Hot Stuff until new mare thing has settled. Couldn't in foal mare be put in a different field, because she probably will be when ready to foal.

My boy will mount my old mare given half the chance. There has been many a times ive chased after him up the field to get him to dismount her. I think he is just a typical "Chap" The only way to stop it was to seperate them . The really sad thing was she would let him  She was a real tart.:o

sorry to sort of drag this up, ive got one gelding, and hes in a field with my 6 mares, he regularly mounts one and has done all year, and last year.. im sure its just one of those things..
at our old yard it was separate fields for mares and geldings and youd regularly see geldings mounting geldings!
atleast its a mare!
not ideal she got hurt though :(
my boy is quite gentle in most ways and my mare seems ok apart from a few bites, which im sure arent all from him!
