Yesterday, my friends horse who has just come into season was put into the field with a gelding. We then later saw the gelding mounting her mare, is this normal behaviour for a gelding or is there a possibility he is a rig? :s we are all very confused so all advice needed!

Geldings can and will do the deed! Only way to tell for sure is a blood test, unless she gets preganant, I suppose - o dear!

Lots of gelding will mount mares. Mine does so does 2 I work with. I rig is sterile so don't worry about the mare getting pregnant.
Is the gelding rigish in his behaviour?

My gelding used to mount the mares and so did others in his field.

My mare has spent the last week shagging her gelding friend (my mare is a tart when in season and backs into him till he climbs aboard

). We separated then in the summer as they we at it all the time and he had front shoes on, but left them to it last week, as he has his shoes off for the winter and the ground is so wet it would be impossible to spilt their field. She now out of season, so they have stopped. I personnally wouldn't worry, unless he shows any other riggy behaviour.

If he behaves like a stallion but isn't fertile he is a false rig in which case, so long as he isn't aggressive, there isn't a problem. probably just means he was cut late.

I got 'shagged' by a shetland once as I was trying to lunge the b*****d! Not an experience I wish to repeat although my friend was crying with laughter. Would have been great for you've been framed!

No we didn't have a camera, sadly. I did find it funny once I had managed to remove him from by back. people get the wrong idea though when you tell them...

No necessarily a rig. My old gelding was gelded at 5 after being used at stud until that age - he'd mount any in season mare and although it's quite disturbing to go into the field and see the 'display' it's probably worth just keeping them apart!
