Gelding Problems

My colt was gelded on 2 May, he is now just finished his second lot of antibiotics, vet now thinks he has an infection in the vaginal sac, vet coming back tomorrow as he is still swollen on one side and discharging small amount of pus, the other side is fine and completely healed. He may now need a general anesthetic to reopen (as only small hole) and flush the vaginal sac out, will find out tomorrow

Anyone heard of this before? or could it be something else?

TBH I wasn't completely happy after the gelding cos a few hours after there was a white bulbous swelling poking out of the hole (only one side), I rang the vets to ask (I panicked and thought it might be his intestine

) he said this was pretty normal and was probably just the vaginal sac filled with fluid, the following morning it had nearly gone, but this is the side he has the infection.
 
would you mind pm'ing the name of your vet??

i have recently bought 3 "geldings" from Wales and TBH the "deed" was atrocious....they have all had really bad infections where i thought one was actually still retaining a "bollock"...

not the best, eh?
 
it isnt unheard of my lad got an infection vet sedated and cleared it all out then had two lots of antibiotics to clear we thought he was going to have to be reopened again under a ga but we were lucky it cleared ,this is why insurance dosent cover complications arrising from gelding ,hope it all goes well .
 
HI, I can fully understand this as my horse went through the exact same thing.

We castrated him late, he'd been a working stallion and moving him onto a livery yard meant that we had geld him.

he was under general for the op, about a month rest after that and then seemed to pick up, he then went down hill very quick, smell was incredible, and he was dull and lifeless in his behaviour.

He has to go back in and have the infection removed, which was (sorry this is gross) a lump about the size of a small melon - ewww.
However, they released him 24hr after this second operation under general, and he was open and still bleeding.
This led to infection getting in again and we nearly lost him.
So he ended up being returned to the vets where I refused to let them release him until he was healed.

You can only imagine the size of the vet bills at this point, and I wasn't covered on the insurance as I had decided to castrate him - it wasn;t a medical problem.

It is somethign that can occur during the whole process, most horses are fine, but some do suffer.

It took months to get him back to full health and work, and he's fine now, but I'm still paying the bills.

I had my yearling chopped in Feb, 3 weeks later he was still swollen, he had already had antibiotics, But I collected him from the stud, 3 weeks alter I had the vet out again coz I just was not happy with it, she was unsure about it & could not get any were near him as he was so fed up by then of being poked and fiddled with, she talked of more antibiotics,she then said to keep taking his Temp if he got a infection his temp would go up! it was about 2 weeks later that I finally felt happy about it. the total gelding bill was about £400 though by the time we finished.
