So my big lad [17hh and pushing 700kg] who was cut late and possibly used for live cover on the continent went a bit lala today as one of the mares is coming into season...

He's always been a ladies man [!!] but never to the point of obsession or where I've been scared...but today I had to get off :(

We tried loose schooling him [probably a bad idea in retrospect] but he was sizing up the manege fence to ping over and get in with her...

Was really hoping to get him out this summer and show him off but not if he's going to be scary and injure somebody

Is there anything i can do? I think he's cut proud but I'd rather avoid surgery if at all possible

My lad also gets these urges, though thankfully he's not as tall as yours.
My lad raped a mare after living with a mare for 2 years, no probs, our new mare is ex broodmare, came into a strong season the day after arriving and we had to seperate them because of laddos reaction.
I put both onto stroppy mare and she is in season now and still out with my lad, with no problems, she's been here a month now, so she could be more settled, but he is definately calmer, ignores her winking, squirting and she is not pestering him

It depends on the horse of course, but as long as he is not put too near any mares he should be OK to take to shows.
My boy got himself in a fix when first exposed to a mare but now he can cope. Even though he was never used as a stallion and was cut at normal time, he has been seen to try to mount with all equipment out, but that was when he was younger, he seems to have calmed down now.
