gelding?

hi there. I have just bought an irish sports horse stallion. he is four years old and has the temperament of an angel. I have other staliions and have the time and space for another. The thing is, i am thinking of gelding him. as i said, he is four years old and i am told he has covered mares. do you think that it is too late?
 
Limited knowledge of cutting stallions, but from what I've heard, cutting at four is considered late and can lead to issues. As a vet once put it, just because he can't doesn't mean he doesn't want to! So saying, I did hear of one being done at six and he was fine.
 
You can geld at any age. Some geldings will always retain stallion tendancies no matter what age they are gelded.

I have had a 3 month old foal gelded and also a 5yo. The 5yo had been used and was rather big. He did swell afterwards but that soon went down and he was fine.
He made a much better gelding than he ever was a stallion.

I pony stud I used to work at had a chap go infertile and he was gelded at the age of 17 with no problems.
If you are worried talk to your vet and get their advice.
 
I brought my lad as a 5yr old who had just been gelded (2 months) and had served numerous mares.
Althouth he was cut late he is still an angel, only time I had a problem was when I had him on livery and he was out in a mixed field. He would round up the mares away from other geldings, and make life difficult for the owners to catch the mares.
For safety reasons I then put him in an all gelding field and never had a problem, likewise I don't have a problem at shows etc...........
I personally think unless you are going to breed from them have them gelded, it just makes life easier as many people are really uneasy about stallions.
I have a 2yr old colt and I'm planning on having him gelded next march before the fly season.....
