I can only seem to mind mares for sale for what I am looking for or the horses are too far away! Anyone having trouble finding the right horse for them?

Ditto HeatherAnn, not all mares are stroppy madams, I know plenty of geldings who are far more difficult than many mares I know. You just have to find the right one for you.

ETA, didn't see your post! Though unless you've young colts there's nothing to say a mare can't go out with geldings

Didn't realise that you HAD to turn out mares with other mares. I don't really get it... There are some mares out there that you wouldn't even know were mares. If you're ruling out a whole gender in your horse hunt then your going to get nowhere fast.

On the whole, if I was buying for me to keep, I'd prefer a mare tbh. But I certainly wouldn't rule out a gelding, maybe you could do the same in reverse to widen the seach? On the whole its called sods law, whatever you are looking to buy is always in small supply!

I had same problem. My boys hadn't been out with a mare and I couldn't face the possible injuries. I found my gelding in the end and have a happy herd

Oh i much prefer the boys, but they are completely outnumbered by the mares :)

Ive had a couple of friends be restricted to what they were looking for as the livery yard they were on (and wanted to stay on) had a single sex policy.

What are you looking for?

TBH I'm sort of with OP on this one. I used to think they should all go out together, and mostly I still do, but having watched a particular mare get *majorly* possessive of a gelding when in season I'd be cautious in a small set-up where you don't have many options for switching around.

that is a good point about when a mare comes into season! kept my gelding on a livery and he fell in love with the mare next to him was a bit of a nightmare when she was in season as he got distressed when he wasn't with her!

I'm looking for a 16-16.3hh 5-8yro to event :)

After seeing one of our mares try to kill a gelding who was 'acting inappropriately' with her, after she'd been out with him all winter, we never turnout in mixed herds. Now that they are at home that does mean that we are restricted to buying mares but I find that it just helps to narrow the choice down.
We have geldings in the adjoining fields and tbh, the mares (not the same ones) are painful with them. I certainly wouldn't want them all in together.

I am another one looking (and struggling) to find a gelding.

I'm after a 4-7yr old gelding, don't mind green (obviously given age range) but do want something slightly (or alot) less neurotic than my current boy who is now semi retired.

I'd like something 15-15.2hh maybe with a bit of native in it - not worried about breeding/colour etc and offering a 5* home for life where hopefully we'll be doing a bit of everything.

I am really struggling and not 1 seller has been entirely honest with me. Gutted - I thought I would enjoy looking but it's a nightmare. :(

I am a bit surprised at your telling off for not looking for a mare lol! I prefer geldings and my boy lives with 2 sweet mares... that's until the natural hormones kick in!! I prefer the male of all species to be honest, usually a lot less complicated!.... I mean look at the female responses you got :D

Geldings are neutered thus easier but OP I have often had mares and geldings and would buddy up the mare with a sensible gelding for turnout if I only had one.
I love mares my best horses where both mares but I love geldings too and stallions I just love horses.

I have the sweetest most pliable gentle loving good looking light cob gelding .... who is very difficult to put in a field with anything else, he just chases them all day.

My mare, on the other hand, I can put in a field with anything (apart from this particular gelding) and know she will get on.

So, you don't always get whats on the tin!

yes I was a bit shocked! Everyone has their own preferences whether it's a mare or a gelding, a cob or a warmblood :)

A good 'oss is a good 'oss. :)

Sexism holds no water with me even when it's concerning horses. It always amazes me how many women are anti-mares.

I can understand 'gelding/mare only' if there is a space on a yard with single sex turnout. On your own land surely the best horse for you in regards to nature, talent, size and conformation is what you should look for?

Maybe I'm crazy. ;)

I had always had mares happily turned out with my daughters geldings. I have just bought my first gelding (thought I was looking for a nice schoolmistress as I am getting on in years). My new boy is 4 and perfect. It's the horse not the sex!
New boy happily now in with his mate (see avatar) even though the TB is an ex-racer who was cut ridiculously late and thinks he's still got his bits!

im having the same problem looking for geldings and seeing lots of mares.

Having had two mares which have been unrideable when in season and one of which was in season all the time i would prefer a gelding as i havent had much luck with mares albeit i had a nice one years ago which was fine in season and the other two since have put me off for the forseeable
