Has anyone else's horse had a general anaesthetic to have sarcoids removed?
I am worried as my vet has told me one in a hundred horses die during surgery AND I lost my last mare on their table during colic surgery two years ago,so I'm freaking out a bit:(

My mare has had 2 GAs both no problems.

If he is otherwise healthy, then he should be absolutely fine. The 1 in 100 figure includes emergency surgery (IIRC) where the risk is much higher.

Hi

We have a grey gelding that was covered in sarcoids - over 60 of them near his mouth, ears, sheath, girth you name it, some bleeding and others just lumps and some with lumps on lumps! Cream just wasn't going to work so our vet suggested putting him under GA, cutting them all off, and then treating what came back with cream. It sounded dramatic but we went for it. That was five years ago now and (touching wood etc etc) we haven't had a single one come back. We are now able to ride him and he is enjoying life. It sounded like drastic butchery at the time - and it wasn't pretty with all of the blood on a grey - but the horse is so much happier now and so are we. So, I'd suggest you go for it : )

I had my boy under GA for iridium wire treatment for a sarcoid above his eye and he's fine and dandy. He went under twice in the space of 10days, once to put the wires in and once to take them out. :)

Understand your fears, I lost a healthy five year old cat under general anaesthetic. Vet was upset and surprised as well.

Back to horses, my horse has had sarcoids removed from the same location, by the same procedure.

General anaesthetic, on back for the removal and cryosurgery to eliminate any remaining cells. Its at least five years since the op and so far there has been no recurrence.

Hope all goes well.

Peegeesmum has your horse had the surgery yet. I am contemplating the same thing with my mare. The consultant who will be carrying out the laser has said a GA as there would be better access to the sarcoids and again I think he needs her on his back.

If you look on the other thread running on this my horse had them removed from this area without GA there's no way I would have exposed him to the risk of a GA for it I would have used Liverpool cream .
