My boxer was attacked while being walked today by an off-lead SBT. The staff tore off the lower third of his ear, obviously we rushed him to the vets as the bleeding was quite significant. The vet decided to cut back the torn cartilidge and stitch the ear under GA. I picked him up at 4.45 and the poor lad is still battling sleep, he's extremely groggy but will not let himself sleep!
Just wondering whether this is normal and how long other people dogs have taken to settle after GA's? Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable?
Thanks for reading :)

Absolutely normal in my experience. Sometimes they battle to wake up at the vets but are still zonked when they get home. Keep him warm and quiet and he should sleep it off and feel better in the morning. Bet his ear will be sore though poor lad. :(

Thanks for your reply, he's propped on some pillows now, snoozing! Cant hear the TV due to his snoring though! Think he's afraid to lie on his ear as its sooo sore :( I will stay downstairs with him tonight, poor boys struggling to bend for his water dish so i'm using a saucer!

You can make a homemade raised water feed by using a bucket or plantpot. Either have the bucket right-way-up and put something heavy in as a weight, then sit the bowl into the top, or if the bowl is too small, flip the bucket/pot upside down and cut a hole in the base for the bowl to sit into. Or even just sit his bowl on top of a box, some bricks, or similar so ihe doesn't have to bend so much.
Anaesthetic can have quite an effect on animals and people - I remember not feeling that tired in the first week after an op but my sleep was very disturbed with vivid dreams and as the pain kicked in after a while I found it difficult to get comfortable to sleep too.

Thanks guys he's much better today, taking his painkillers and anti-b's well. He's drinking and eating normally today, thank god! The head bandage disnt make it past 9am though! Wound seems clean, I will post a pic tomorrow. The other dogs owner had no remorse, I gave them a piece of my mind but was too preoccupied with Neds wound, Is there any action I can take to stop this happening again?
If it had been my pup he would have been killed! So dangerous :(
