I was on our (Ie mum and dad's) yard today pottering about in a usual Sunday morning kinda way with my 2 y.o. little boy racing round (as he does) with his little red push a long car on the yard... When 2 women wander down to our stables... They asked if we had any room for DIY livery. Now we don't advertise for livery and it is very much a private yard but we do take liveries on if people ask and the lady who has a yard down the road and only does full livery sometimes sends people who are looking for DIY our way. SO I said well we have 6 stables free at the moment but only 2 on the out side yard (4 are inside stables). They asked if they could have a look and a nosey round the turn out and I showed them what we have etc. They then asked how much we charged and I told them...

Then they said that they would come but I would have to stop my little boy playing on the yard as it's not a play ground it's a livery yard. I explained (in the nicest possible way) that it was his 'home' and that he was going nowhere and if that was a problem then this wasn't the yard for them. They then got really angry and basically lost the plot with me saying I'd wasted their time etc etc... and how was this anyway to run a business... (it's not a business it's my parents home which sometimes has a 'horsey lodger' so to speak) I told them to 'go away' only not using those words but FFS.... they could see the little boy before they asked any questions what so ever..

PS On a positive note I passed 3 people riding in single file with loads of hi viz and each one of them said thank you as I passed wide and slow... so there are some good people in the world!!

That was a lucky escape! Good thing your little boy was there at the time - imagine if you'd said yes, they'd come to stay and THEN had their hissy fit....

Good riddance, says I! ;)

Bullet dodged!

Reminds me of a time a friend was interviewing someone for an accounting job, and jokingly asked him if he was an axe murderer, at which point he went BALLISTIC and started ranting about how he'd bought a new tie for the interview and so on. At least she knew not to give him the job, and you know what silly cows these women are before they're ruining the place...

The last DIY yard I was at was a working farm and the farmer's 7 grandchildren would often play in the yard or the fields. It wasn't a problem as if I asked nicely they would happily stop playing for a couple of minutes while I mounted. TBH I was happy for them to improve my horse's bombproofing the rest of the time and they never wound her up in anyway. The farmer welding up his tractor 2m infront of her stable did wind her up a bit, but even then he stopped while I mounted and she still stood perfectly while I got on! :D I was very proud of her.

Oh I have had a few of these types!

I have my own yard with stables and land attached, I also have had people come up and ask about livery, I have always said you are welcome to rent a stable and a field, but this is MY home please respect that.

I have had people trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't do - blimin cheek, they can bu**er off :)

Oh sod em and good riddance - I have two children and hate it when horsey people look down their noses at me for try to live a family life.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet!

Our livery yard has its kids and loose dogs running around. As a result, my pony is completely chilled with them. She's very sweet with the kidlings and calm with the dogs where she used to be frightened of loose dogs.

I only get irritated if people let their kids run around unsupervised in a way that endangers the kids and others.

He doesn't play with things when people have their horses out on the yard as I would worry about HIM but seeing all our ponies were out in the field then I don't see the issue... All our horses are very chilled with him and the hideous brightly coloured plastic he leaves lying around - he's a great tool for bombproofing!!!

But I'm not going to justify his existance to anyone -- we have a lovely chilled yard and our liveries are happy (and could bring their kids - if they had them) and do bring their band of hairy but friendly dogs... glad they showed their colours early cos I love the atmosphere there and wouldn't want to feel like I had to step on eggshells round anyone down there!

So what would these women do if they were hacking and a kid came alongside them on a bike or a skateboard?? I would rather my horse get used to that sort of thing on a yard rather that on a road!

I was once hacking Mick and leading Shiney down a bridlepath in trot and two women on horses coming towards me had a right hissy and it was scaring their horses. FFS - I had to drop Shiney behind Mick and pass them on the verge while they stayed two abreast shaking in their boots.. damn people.

Funnily enough the same thing happened at a yard I worked at once. A woman came down the drive asking if we did liveries (not really as it is a private family yard, sometimes took on a training livery for racing). We did have a box free and showed her around. She then had a go at my boss for having her 2 year old running around the yard and told us it's not a very good way to run a business. It's a private yard on the families land FFS not a livery business!!

The child was only allowed on the yard when the horses were turned out or in the stables. And the horses were all very accustomed to him and his toys laying about.

I just think people are getting more blooming cheecky every day. Fancy telling the owners what to do on their own yard! I've been to look at yards, they've not been what I've wanted (mainly due to turn out options) and I've politely gone away to look at other options which is what those two bumpers should have done.
Well done you for telling them to get lost!
