General observation about horsey people...why do they do this?!

I've seen someone do that. There i was on small and very fat RS pony and we went past someone on their rather nice looking horse, she gave him a jab in the sides to hype him up and then over did it with the reins to show off to me the mere RS kid how she had masterfully brought him under control. We plodded on...

Oh and i remember when i used to lead rein kids at a RS and they put back on lead rein because even though she knew the basics of stopping starting and steering at walk and trot she was so lazy n just wouldnt - someone was bound to get hurt eventually. i then endured her banging on about riding with her friend and how fun it was being bolted with.

Yeah...real fun when you get thrown under a bus.

I am too old to read all the replies.
I just thought I would say that horses are individuals - some are sharper than others, and will not tolerate a novice rider.
My old TB has perfectly good manners, is safe to ride in the school, out on hacks alone or in company, and is safe as houses on the roads, and she has always been like this for me - I have come off her about twice in the 15yrs since I broke her.
However, and this is a big however, this does NOT mean that any unbalanced, rein-sawing numpty can clamber aboard, boot her in the ribs and yank her to get her to go left or right. If this happens, she decks them unceremoniously.
In the past, I have had BHSIs who have ridden Badminton refuse to ride her because 'they can't afford to break a limb'

On the other hand, if someone rides quietly enough, they can ride her, and that's great. I also used to use her for lunging lessons for Stage 1 students, again great.
Not all horses are novice rides.

funny that because once i was given a notorious difficult chestnut mare to rebreak ( a TB bred to race) and she was really sharp decked me several times and no-one else would get on her. then we gor this canadian student who could barely ride but had a nice way and she asked if she could do her when i wasa way for a few days. everyone was so shocked when i said yes but the girl rode very quietly and put on no pressure and i reckon the horse liked her more than me! she certainly didnt dump her. odd isnt it?

I've noticed with my mare, it isn't necessarily how good the rider's technique is, it is whether she likes them or not.
