It really does mean bugger all. The positioning of the D rings is not universal in the slightest. There is no fixed prescript to say 'they must go here' and they can be in different places even comparing the same brand, model and size of saddle. Just one centimetre further up or down will give you the same measurement between rings for a narrow and a x-wide. And never mind which part of the D-rings it's measured from.
A more accurate measure, but rarely used, is the angle - a 'wide' saddle's points should be at 90degrees, so the corner of a sheet of A4 paper. Annoyingly however a 'wide' in one brand of saddle is not nessesarily the same as a 'wide' in another.
It would be nice if there was standardisation to saddle widths - it's make life so much easier!
There is more to fitting than just the width of the tree at the points and as kallibear says, the measurement from D to D means nothing. And widths and lengths vary so much between makes. Its just not as simple as saying you need a 17" medium wide saddle, there is much more to saddle fitting than that.
You need to know the width, panel type, tree type and length and thats just the starting point. A saddler/fitter cant make a saddle fit if any of these are wrong. Buying a saddle off one measurement, particularly the d to d one, is a very long shot and quite frankly madness!
i never said you were not having a fitter and yes, you did suggest that you werent going to get a saddle from a saddler, just get them to fit it. Implying you were buying a saddle from someone else and then getting a saddler to fit it.
Anyway, from the tone of your responses to people trying to help im not really sure why you posted in the first place, you obviously dont really need the help.

Of course! Don't want to pay saddler prices though - will pay them to fit it!

I bought a beautiful second hand Albion for my horse of Ebay - which my saddler fitted for me. However, he also saw the horse beforehand, measured him up and told me exactly what to look for - including the best brand of saddle for my horse.
That's a good idea actually SS, he's coming back out for another horse so I might ask his advice - just don't want to waste his tme fitting saddles to go and buy one elsewhere!
