Hi, I'm looking for a generator for my lorry. Can anyone recommend the minimum size they would go for, any to look for, any to stay clear of? I want to run a TV, hair straightners and mobile phone chargers.
Many thanks.

Me too !!!
was actually just going to post same question minus the hair-straighners bit

You need to find the wattage of the of all the electrical items you are plannig to run at the same time and add them up.
Then find a generator where the continous output is slightly higher than that.

Just be aware that the cheap generators are often EXTREMELY noisy. It might provide the power but you could well be very unpopular with the people parked around you and watching the telly may well be a less than pleasant experience.

I've got a leisure battery and it will run my lights and TV ( I have got a 12v one) and phone charger for a week without needing to be recharged. It is also silent.

If you can live with out the hair straightners I wouldn't bother with a generator. Leisure batteries start from £40.

For the TV and phone chargers you'd be better off getting a couple of 12V outlets put in which run off your leisure battery, we had this done and it cost about £50. For the hair straighteners what about cordless ones which run off a small gas cylinder?

ETS Only just saw Dieseldogs post

I agree about the leisure battery and a mains inverter for the smaller electrical items, and gas for fridge / hair strighteners etc......but am very interested to know what sort of TV anyone is using that would run for a week from a leisure battery

I had a small portable (admittedly CRT) tv that drained a leisure battery in just a few hours

My TV is one of those small £20 ones you can buy with a built in CD Player/radio. You tend to find them in Pikey shops - maybe that's why you haven't come across them before.

What sort of size is it ?

Must admit we got given a free (v.small) digital LCD tv recently when we bought our new lounge tv and I had planned to put that in the lorry instead as it runs off 12v or mains or internal battery....presuming it uses much less juice than a bulky 14" portable too lol! It is tiny though

The TV is small, your kids wouldn't want to play Nintendo on it.

The other problem is that soon we we all need freeview boxes as well to watch TV when the analouge system gets turned off, and then proper aeirals as well. By freeview box at home is 12v but not sure how much juice it will use.
