Generic Advice

Another one...

'What do you think of my horses confirmation?' which actually reads 'What do you think of my horses confirmation - brilliant isnt it, don't you wish you had a horse this fantastic' and 'if anyone doesn't think so, I will ignore them anyway'

Since when has being inexperienced been a crime, or something to take the p1ss out of?

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Do you have room for me S?

My horse is permanently lame/in pain/unridable and I can't afford to keep it but I love it too much. Shall I put it on loan or sell it on? - No. Do the right thing and PTS.

Can you have kids AND horses?

Answer: yes if you are actually motivated and can multitask, its hard work and yes it is hectic, deal with it!

'I bought my horse from a girl in Leicester who was eventing at advanced level. When I tried her, she was perfect, and I've won everything for the last six months.
Recently, though, she has become naughty and I am sure this is due to abuse from the Leicester owner now showing. How do I find a NH person to help me as I don't want to be cruel and smack her?' - Yep, horses are always naughty with the next owner along....

Or
'I don't know what a Chambon/Pessoa/De Gogue/Abbott Davies/Market Harborough is but I want to use one on my horse. Can someone tell me what to do?' -
If you don't know how to use it, then don't (or get an experienced person to SHOW you).

Help I can't control my very excitable, sharp TB. He's tanking off with me every time we ride (last time into oncoming traffic as we hacked down the A15), rearing and generally misbehaving He's ridden in a snaffle and fed three hard feed meals a day. Shall I change his bit?
Nope try his diet first or invest indecent life insurance

'given who started it'?!
shocked.gif
How rude!
In my defence, I'd like to point out that I do try to help other HHO forum folks (as they help me), and don't generally take the p*$$ unless under severe provocation.
This thread is not mentioning a single specific person, nor is it meant to.
So there!

I shall take myself to the corner and beat myself repeatedly about the head with a frying pan in a useless attempt to beat some sense in to me.
Would that serve as an appology for completely misunderstanding your thread and all the responses

Based on someone I know:

"I too scared to ride my horse so only lunge it or get other people to ride it" (like I did the other WBs/TBs that I have had) - Well sell it then and buy a sensible cob type then

I am sure some nearby woman would be happy to beat you about the head with a frying pan...

You did ask
'Since when did being inexperienced become a crime and something to take the p*$$ out of?'
Well, I don't think being novicy or inexperienced is a crime, but neither should ignorance or lack of knowledge be accepted or celebrated where there is remedy available,

'My horse has been in 24/7 because my YO is saving the fields for hay. He is very lively now, what can I give him to calm him down?' - How about some time to be a horse, and some exercise?

I didn't take it as taking the mick out of inexperienced horse owners, more as a light-hearted observation about how the same questions which require similar answers get repeated on here on a regular basis. Perhaps we should ask Admin to sticky this thread so posters can check it out first before they post!

(I must admit that I have answered the 'my horse is too thin' question so often that I have saved my generic answer on my computer so that I can just cut and paste into future posts!)

I have to say that i would never be scared to ask Shilasdair for advice!
I always think its good advice, and often is taken the wrong way by people who dont really want good advice in the first place!

Thanks

I've had lots of good practical advice from HHO too...between us all we have a vast amount of experience/range of information which is one of the reasons I like reading posts...to learn new stuff. After all, if you get advice you don't want, you can always just ignore it - action is not compulsory.
But why does everything have to be deadly serious?

Just to save everyone time, here’s some generic free advice;

‘My horse is losing weight’ – check teeth, worm, get vet checked, feed more
‘My horse is naughty to handle’ – check teeth, worm, get vet checked, discipline more
‘My horse misbehaves under saddle’ – check teeth, get vet checked, check saddle and bridle fitting, get a decent instructor
‘I can’t afford vet’s bills’ – sell your horse.
‘My horse is a nutter’ – sell your horse
‘My mare is an evil cow, should I put her in foal as I can’t ride her?’ – no, not unless you want two evil cows

Anyone care to add any?

"I ride a dark bay horse at 6am on country roads within commuting distance of London. I don't wear a hat because I have my hair in an up-do, and the harness would mess with my earrings anyway. But I always wear protective clothing such as a dark green Barbour jacket, and I carry a lead in case my dog dives under a car. But I keep getting shouted at by passing motorists (goodness, they pass awfully close and fast!)? What am I doing wrong?"

Ummm, anyone care to advise ...?

"I want to use draw reins on my horse to get its head in. I have not used them before though and wondered if I should put them through the 2nd or 3rd ring on my Dutch Gag? " - Have some lessons!

I think lots of people just want to hear nice things about their neddy! Posting under false modesty most of the time.
Some people probably post thinking they want the truth but when someone tells them it they realise they dont actually want to hear it and react badly! For alot of people their ponies are their children and they dont like a bad word said about them!
I have taken a lot of good advise from here too, not asked anyone, just gleaned it from other posts that apply! Pony now goes far better and is much happier being ridden!
