Good Morning lovely doggie people!

God I feel like a bit of a fraud, I haven't been on here for so long! But if you can bare to share your wisdom with a lot of an AAD part-timer, I would really be grateful!

Some of you may remember last year, we had a bit of a traumatic experience trying to "mate" Bonnie...to cut a long story short, it involved a novice stud, KY Jelly, Tissues and a really mad dog woman! And then nothing happened!

Well we have had another go and the deed was done, six weeks ago on Tuesday! At risk of sounding really, really stupid, we don't know if it worked! I took her for a scan 10 days ago, for a start the machine wasn't working very well, the picture was really "grainy", our vet said he couldn't see anything at all, but she might have "one or two" and they were "hiding"??? However, without actually having got out a tape measure, now or at the beginning, she seems to be thicker set, comparing nipples between now and a very unelegant picture taken at Christmas, they are certainly bigger and darker, but not yet "bagging up".

What I am asking is; Is there anything else we should look for? Is it worth taking her back to the vet for another scan at £60 a go? I know I shouldn't be impatient, but I would like to know, not least because I should be feeding her more and just giving her a bit more TLC than usual! (She is currently assuming her normal position, under my desk, snoring loudly with a teddy in her mouth!)

Finally, she is 5 this year, if it hasn't worked, do we try again or is that just too late? We only ever intended to let her have one litter.

Why are you so desperate to mate her ? There's enough dogs in the world, that of course is my opinion, please don't take offence

Can't they do a urine test like humans ? or blood test or something

You could go down boots and try a pregnancy test

I wouldn't say we were desperate! She is our beloved pet (Springer) she has a beautiful nature, is small, smart as a button and an outstanding worker. We would like to keep one of her puppies (boy or girl) and have five friends, who want them too. I know they would go to suitable homes, wouldn't be left all day and would get plenty of excercise on farms and working too. If it doesn't work, it obviously wasn't meant to be. I agree there are enough dogs with out homes in the world, but call me selfish, we and many of our friends, customers, lorry drivers etc. Just LOVE Bonnie!

P.S. Unfortunately I don't think the little sticks and blue lines work! I think the ultimate hormone is different!

I know where you're coming from, I have a springer bitch now called Bailey, I've never known a more affectionate dog in my life, I had a mongrel bitch before who wasnt' that cwtchy and a male GSD who was, but Bailey just loves hugs and affection she hands it out in bucket loads she understands lots of words and is mummy's little girl dont' tell daddy, she is 3 March 10th, we didn't have her from a puppy but I bet she was lovely, shame bout the pregnancy test ha ha

I'll ask my friend on the weekend she's a vet, an equine one but she may know

At 6 weeks I would imagine her to be showing a bit, she should have lost her "Waist" and levelled out on her underline if that makes sense. The last time I had a bitch scanned they were done at 5 weeks and the pups were quite clearly visible, I wouldn't be very happy that your vet was so vague, or that they didn't reduce the price if the machine wasn't working properly. I don't know if scans can be done at a later date but personally I wouldn't bother, you should know for sure in another week or so, has she changed in personality at all, that is often a give away.
I wouldn't consider having a first litter from a bitch over 5, but others may think differently.

She is definately not as defined (physique wise) as she usually is and is slightly less crazy than usual, but I wondered if that was just her age? (I live in hope sometimes I might have a slightly calmer springer spaniel...?)

I think I am going to take her back to the vets next week. I promise to let you know how we get on!

My JRT Mouse is 6 and a half wks gone:

Mum's Wire Viz is nearly 7wks and has only just started to show, she was scanned to have 7 or 8 maybe more, but just looked fat.

Neither have filled up milk bars yet but they have swollen up. Have you any piccies of your girlie - might help us give you more advice.

I've been told that 5 is the absolute latest to mate a maiden bitch. Both my sets of pups were from huge litters, 10 & 12 pups in each. Have you got potential homes lined up for that any? There's no guarantee that any of the pups will look like or be like your girl.

Rather than breed, why not go back to your girl's breeder and get another like her? Have you health tested her? Retinal atrophy is just one of the recommended test for springers.

I'd never stud any of my lot out cos therevare hundreds of springer litters out there. Check out the mobiya website.

Sorry to be negative, but I think there are enough springers (most popular breed on petforums.co.uk)

Agree, but if the bitch is already in whelp wouldn't we all be better advising the OP not telling her there are enough dogs about etc? Not having a go, just my opinion

I'm going on the premise that the dog is not in whelp and I'm not 'having a go'. The OP has 5 homes lined up; what if there are 12 puppies-quite likely for springers?

If the dog is not in whelp, then I stand by what I said. If she is, then I expect lots of pictures.

I spoke to my friend who is a vet and there's a blood test they can do to confirm pregnancy, I think I'd think about changing my vet if they were that rubbish and the machine wasn't working, she didn't say that I did
