Hi there

First of all - most (if not all?) competitions are affiliated. The 'rules' for all disciplines are laid out in the LPO. Levels are E A L M S.

E is the very basic test, a bit like the 'Prelim' tests in the UK, A is a bit like 'Novice' tests in the UK and so on.

Jumps are

E 85 - 95 cm

A* 95 – 105 cm, A** 105 – 115 cm.

L 115 - 125 cm

M / B 125 – 135 cm and M / A 135 – 140 cm

S* 140 – 145 cm, S** 145 – 150 cm, S*** 150 - 155 cm, S**** > 155 cm

Be careful with your bitting in both dressage and jumping – free choice only in the higher classes, otherwise you are normally confined to snaffles.

However, I understand that from 2008 'non-professional' test can be ridden under the WBO (a new set of rules aimed at the hobby rider). I have no idea as to what the detail are for WBO tests…

Good luck!

I used to live in Germany too, here is a rough breakdown of dressage levels (I hope these are right, its been a while!)
E - Prelim
A - Novice
L - Elem/Medium
M - Advanced Medium
S - Advanced

When I competed I still had to be a member of BD and get permission to compete affiliated abroad.
