I'm looking at buying a horse that was imported from Germany some 8 years ago. However, both the owner who first imported and the subsequent owner have never had the passport changed over into their names. Apparently this is because of the difficulties in doing so due to language problems and worries about postage and loss. I have been able to confirm ownership and traced back to the reputable previous owner/importer - owns a renowned equestrian centre, and have got copy documents, receipts and other papers, so don't feel there is any doubt over ownership.

Just how difficult is it to have the passport changed? Would it have any impact on insurance or competitions etc being in the original German details? I know that they are not supposed to confirm ownership but it is a bit of a niggle for me.

As it happens I do have some in-laws who live in Germany and may be able to send the papers in via their address if needed.

Acc. to EU regulation 504/2008 one has to notify the change of ownership to the FN but I know quite a few people who never do that.

However, if you wanna do it copy the passport in case the original should get lost. The FN wants you to fill out a form for change of ownership and the original passport. Form for change of ownership is here: http://www.pferd-aktuell.de/shop/index.php/cat/c104#20281 ''Formular für Besitzerwechsel-Anzeige - Artikelnummer: 20280" (This is Germany, that means there's a form for everything! LOL )

When sending both to the FN do it by registered mail. However, in case passport should get lost you have a copy and the FN will issue a new passport. No biggie.

No idea if this is any different in your case , i.e. from the UK but maybe your in-laws could call the FN and ask??? Hope this helps, if not feel free to ask. I also can call the FN if you like. No problem!

I just sent my German Hanoverian passport to the British Hanoverian society and they did everything for me within a couple of days. Look for the equivalent British society and they should have details of the process on their website.

Was just going to say use the British version. Although the one I tried to use never got back to me with the form, price or where to send passport so I never bothered
