Evening all
we are hoping to add to our doggy family by getting a German shepherd puppy. Can anyone recommend reputable breeders in the above areas ?
Thanks in advance ! :)

I don't know of any breeders locally at the moment who I would recommend but will ask around. What exactly are you looking for - pet, work, show or a bit of each. Also what is your budget , decent pups are usually £500 plus. If you find any and would like to pm me details (breeding, parents health test results etc), I can try and help.

Thanks for replying. She would be mainly as a pet to join our other two [ female shepherd and loopy male collie]. They are 5 and 9 respectively. Good temperament essential - I would have gone for a rescue[the other 2 are both rescues] but they need to be good around horses and rock solid for small children visiting so thought a puppy might be a safer bet.

Current shepherd is very large - dad and grandad were police dogs and she has a straight back rather than sloping which I've heard is better for hips etc ? Actually looks very similar to the dog in your picture facially - she came from Durham originally but would rather avoid going too far that way if possible !

Expecting to pay £500 plus - seems to be the going rate ....:]

It is a fallacy that the straight backlines have better hips, the only thing that can influence hips is the scores going back on the pedigree, which is why it is important to not just check the parents scores. If you know your current girl's pedigree I can maybe see if I can find breeders with similar lines which would be a start.

Fab
will have a look and see what I can find - we did get her papers from the person we 'rescued' her from - no ill treatment - just usual small house and no land and time poor - but as we spayed her didn't bother to file them safely as felt there was no real need. As it is we have completely fallen for the breed -having always had collies or spaniels she has been a real eye opener. So loyal and calm and super round the neds !

MM seems to have everything in hand but just thought I'd mention that we got our youngest from Cedars Mount in Church Stretton. He seems extremely healthy so far (nearly 3). Breeder was very well informed, full health checks available; hip and elbow scores for mum and dad, and she likes to know what happens to the pups etc. We had to interview for ours. I think she was fantastic. We paid £650 when we got him, which I think was very reasonable.

Thanks for that SadKen, its always good to know of decent breeders in the area. I am always slightly cautious of recommending pure working line to pet homes but definitely one to bear in mind. Although their bitches seem to have both had litters beginning of this year so don't suppose they will have pups till next year at the earliest.

I certainly concur 're working lines. My younger boy has a very strong drive and an incredible amount of energy. He's from the 2011 litter. He'd have made a fab police dog or similar. Having said that, he was obviously the most driven dog out of the litter even as a baby, trying to explore and escape at six weeks! He's a very good pet for us. Not suitable for a sedentary owner but fine for us! I considered a Czech dog but they were too 'working' for our needs and I didn't think they'd be happy in a pet home, I think they are more extreme workers than my lad tho.

Our older boy came from an amateur breeder in evesham. Both parents were fully health tested and from very successful show lines. He is really beautiful, and very quiet now he's a grown up so show lines probably are easier. He's a thinker but still quite active. However despite all that care and investigation, he does have a congenital heart murmur that we will have to keep a close eye on. Unless he's walking, he usually lies down and watches the world go by. He's our first show dog so I don't know if that's breeding, just him, or the heart issue. I think we'd go working again next time, but not too much!

Ets I think cedars has the pick of the litter left for sale as they were going to keep him. Just from a nose on champdogs!
