Just wondering -
Has anyone had a mare in foal over 380 days?
Was the foal ok when it was born?
Was it a colt or a filly?

399 days, it was a colt and he is now a fine strapping 2 year old. Never a problem from the minute he was born.

It was just me that was frazzled

Seriously, they don't work!!

They will all tell you your mare is due either 343 or 347 days after last cover - she's not! She's due SOMEWHERE between 320 and 370 days after last cover - if you're lucky! Watching the mare like a hawk from about 300 days MIGHT ensure you don't miss it!

This year, with 9 mares foaling, gestation length varied from 318 days for the earliest through to 344 for the latest (thankfully my mares tend to be early rather than late.) All were fine.

But a friend had a mare foal at 347 days (so full term) and the foal was very dysmature and didn't make it! 9And the dates were definitely right.) A foal is born when it's ready (usually!)

This one is American - but quite useful if you substitute EHV vaccinations for Rhino vaccinations. http://www.mothernatureskit.com/mother_natures_foaling_calcu.htm - although I would put in a second 28 day scan and forget the later palpations.
