I am due to have my next baby over the next couple of weeks and my horse Jae *looks* like he is due to give birth to a grass baby any day now!

He was in full work until March 1st with me and then light work from March until end of May which consisted of having a schooling/jumping session for an Hr 1x per week with a pro event rider and 3x lunging sessions with side reins and raised pole work with me.

Since the beginning of June he has been on holiday 24/7 in the field only coming in 1/2x per week for a brush.

I'm not exactly sure when the baby will come but should be fairly soon (by the mid-end of July), then of course I need a couple weeks to recover so realistically I won't be riding until the beginning - middle of August.
Jae will have been in light work for 3 months and then no work for 8-10 weeks.

How long to get him fit enough for a couple showjumping classes?

What fitness regime would you recommend?

He's a TB and he has been out the whole time so it's not like he's a heavy breed that's been on box rest...BUT I don't want to get over excited, do too much too soon and risk an injury!

Thank you!

I would have thought about 8 weeks of work and he should be easily ready to do some SJ classes, maybe even less time if he is worked 6 days a week.

Hope all goes well with the birth of your little one. I hope to be back on in the next month, but I had a section and my horse has been turned away for 8 months, so we will both be starting from scratch. Also trying to find the time to ride at the minute would be difficult. I congratulate all those that manage to ride and compete when they have a newborn. I thought I would be one of those, but wow are they time consuming!

Since he's gone into his 2-month furlough reasonably fit, I wouldn't worry overly. I'm sure if you build up the exercise and jump heights reasonably gradually, he'll be fit to do 2 classes before you are! :D Do you have much hacking near you?

Anyway, all the best for the impending arrival! :)

I had second baby 8 months ago and seriously cannot find time to ride - can manage to 'do' them, but that's it. Hoping to get back on board in a couple of months. Breastfeeding on demand has made it difficult... But I wouldn't do it differently. Babies aren't babies for long and there will be plenty of time for me to ride as time goes on.

I am lucky that horse is old ish anyway so don't feel guilty for giving him holiday and other is only a 2 month old foal anyway, so it's actually ok for me. Couldn't mamage with a youngster or something that needs consistent schooling or bringing on etc.

Competing and babies sounds like my worst nightmare together!

Best of luck and I'm sure you will find a way / routine that suits you when the time comes. Babies have a habit of having their own agenda though lol!
Sorry I haven't answered your question either !!

Thanks,
I have booked a show for 12/13th of Sept to give me something to work towards! My family are visiting then as well so they can help ;).
Yep I know how hard it is, this is my second child! Luckily the first child is now 2 and is in playgroup a couple mornings a week, my husband is at home and I have a part time nanny.
Nursing is hard but luckily yard is 5 mins from my house and I nurse every 2-3hrs, I never did demand feeding and it worked really well. With my first I used to give him his early morning feed when he woke up around 4am, put him back in the bassinette next to my hubs (or give him to hubs to cuddle), dash off to do an early morning ride and then back by 6am before either of them were out of bed!
Not looking forward to the sleep ramifications of that again but it gets easier after a couple months.
Good luck to all the new mummys! Riding literally saved my sanity last time lol.
