My loan horse is allergic to fly/midge bites which is bad enough but even worse he's allergic to fly repellant too! Any ideas, he wears a fly rug and mask however loves to have his mates pull it off so I would like something to help!!

Well Think Fly by Brinicombe Equine comes in granules to go in the horses feed or in a lick. It's a repellent but in a feed form and basically says it leaves a shield-like effect around the horse to repel the flies. It has good reviews and I'm pretty sure I have seen people on this forum rate it pretty well too. It's £30 for a supply that will last 40 days but you can buy it in larger quantities too. :)

How about Garlic, flies hate the smell of it.Could make a repellent from garlic (boil until soft, then cool and add water) pop in spray bottle.
Or garlic in the food?

Trouble is these licks are made from molasses which my horse can't have, I just put garlic in his feed and a fly rug on and make some fly repel with Avon skin so soft, vinegar etc
See the thread on sweet itch, I've put the recipe on there

Umm, have tried the Think Fly stuff and found it as useless as a nun in a punch-up TBH, but having said that my horse was at livery and I can't be 100% certain that they gave the correct dosage and/or were regular in it.

I'm using pig oil on mine; plus some Neem Oil and Tea Tree mixed in, the "science" being that flys hate landing on a greasy/oily coat so go elsewhere!

We have an arab x show pony and he comes up in great lumps when bitten. When he arrived he came with all his kit which included fly sheets and masks. However he loves rolling and always managed to get the mask off. I did try various sprays and repellants, and then tried some Global Herbs Fly Free and for him it really does work - last summer he was out with no mask no fly sheet and no bites. You see the mossies land and take off again. I don't find it as effective on the hairy NF, he still seems to get nibbled by the flies, it might be he's so hairy they can't taste him till they've got through the hair?

When you say allergic to fly repellent what do you mean?
Some horses are allergic to the Citronella present in many sprays - could that be it?
If so there are natural sprays without Citronella (based on coconut extract I believe).
If you are not adverse to using chemical products you should lookk at tritec 14. Not only a repellent but also kill the insects. Not cheap (although if used correctly quite long lasting) but very efficient, has been used in the states for years.

Plenty to try, Thank you!
I think I will try the global herbs, might see if I can find any other reviews and possibly try to make a homemade fly spray :) i'm not sure if they have tried sprays with things in and not in...just got told he's allergic to horse fly spray. I'll have to check, maybe a human spray would be less reactive?
