I've just been to feed merchant and he is pulling his hair out trying to source shavings from anywhere, there are hardly any left in the country apparently. He sent dozens of emails to The States and Canada for some and they're all the same; the situation is tight, so be warned. He reckons you'll be seeing the TEN POUND bale shortly if it carries on!

Usually, once they go up, they don't come back down again either which is a worry for everyone.

I know there's normally a shortage after xmas, but that's ridiculous

I bet the price of other bedding goes up as well if shavings do get more expensive

We haven't had any for weeks, so I've been driving to a tack shop a little way away. Apparantly ingatestone are rationing theirs as well. Worrying...

ISC were rationing but I thought they'd stopped now? I know they were all expecting a delivery around end of Jan which would ease the supplies.
If it goes to £10 a bale, I'll be moving Twig to straw I think, that's a ludicrous amount of money to pay for something to be sh*tted on!!

You could try NedzBedz...it works well once you are used to it and no dust compared with even the best shavings...I think it's hemp or rape stalks chopped and treated to make unpalatable. It's much easier to manouevre than straw and breaks down really fast...fantastic mulch for the garden.

Our supplier (west hampshire) has had some difficulty, with one brand not being available until March. The price has gone up by about 50p. I have managed to buy a few bales but our horses live out and only come in for a couple of hours to feed etc so I'm not too concerned yet. I think there have been other suppliers in the area that have run out and this does seem to have created a bit of a panic buying situation where poeple are buying up more bales than usual thus creating a shortage for everyone!

we're in devon, and our supplier is having trouble getting shavings. he travelled to cardiff the other day to pick some up.

I've had the same problem, those that are around are jolly expensive too.
I can find big flakes but they make a bad mix with the miscanthus we use, so have accepted paying more to get decent ones..
The reason my feed merchant was given was that bad weather had affected the building trade so no work meant no wood being needed..
I've changed to mostly miscanthus and it works well.

My local tack shop is limiting shavings to 3 per car! ISC was 6 bales per vehicle last time i was there. It's worrying, might have to change to something else, can't have jig on straw cos he gets mites so may have to try some other bedding if shavings get too hard to get hold of!

and posts like this don't help!! the situation will ease soon - as soon as people stop panic buying......
