Hello

I need some advice with feeding electrolytes - I have brought Equine America, NAF, Feedmark and Global Herbs electrolytes and my horse refuses to eat any of them - he needs to be fed them as he sweats excessively (he has Cushing’s).

Anyone any tips? I don’t want to put them in water as I fear that he just won’t drink (and we have automatic troughs).

Are any of them more palatable than others? I dont want to keep wasting money!!

Thanks in advance

What are you mixing them with? Have you tried them in Speedibeet? Must say our horse is quite a fussy eater but doesn't seem to mind NAF Electrosalts at all.

I had the same issues with my boy and he is also a horse that sweats a lot.I got the Naf Electro Salts-it said he was to have 3 scoops a day.He is fed 3 x a day so has 1 scoop in each feed.I just make sure that its mixed in with food that I know he will eat.He now happily eats it no problem. They just don't seem to like it on mass so try splitting it if you can until the horse becomes accustomed to it.

Syringe them in? Either the syringy ones or just mix the ordinary ones with water and squirt?
Molasses/apple juice in with them?

I am so glad I don't have a fussy eater

You can't really feed sugar beet to a cushings horse!

We have a fussy lad who needs to be encouraged to drink in the heat - to the extent he actually collapsed at PC camp last year.

Having struggled all year to find something he will accept NAF electro salts are the only ones. We've tried juice in the water, horse quencher, other makes, plain salt the lot.

Having said that this lad is a performance horse so we have need for electrolytes rather than plain salt. Our cushings lad was happy with a salt block - he would eat the hanging ones in 2 - 3 days but if we took them away he became very depressed. He just genuinely did need that level of salt. He was retired as the loss of back fat from the condition as it progressed rendered him unrideable. But you might find that if your lad will eat salt as ours did that this might serve the same purpose. You can get mixed electrolyte type blocks.

I guess he won't drink them with apple juice? I put mine in a bucket of water (leaving the normal bucket available) and they like that, but you could add a small amount of something tasty?

Hi, I feed mine in some hard feed and she seems to like them! Its a tub called Electrolyte plus from a company called Roben Oils. My freind brought some for me because my horse is fussey and the girl in the tackshop said she had heard the horses lked these ones and so far so good!

We syringe them. Just mix normal electrolytes with a small amount of water and off you go. That way I can make 100% sure they get them. We use TRM's gold ones, they are absolutely super.
