Just wondered what the best way will be for me to get my mare in season early for the stallion as I am hoping to breed a March foal. She is a bit of a funny mare when it comes to seasons. I could never tell you when her seasons are as doesn't show to her gelding boyfriend. There are days when I put a tail bandage on and she will kink her tail a bit but then sometimes the next day nothing. I've always joked she comes in and out as she pleases. The only thing I can stay is sometimes when I have stabled over at shows and (yes I'm always the one who gets it) is surrounded by stables of rowdy stallions by the next morning she is in. Whats the best way to get her in season for the stallion? Is it just to have her scanned and jabbed in? Or hope being away at stud around stallions may bring her in?

Advice much appreciated! ATB

As far as I know you can't bring a mare into season just by showing her to a stallion, she was prob in season and/or she just may be a bit more flirty when she knows it's the real thing. Many mares don't " show". Your vet will need to do a ultrasound scan to check where she is in her cycle, if she has recently had a season you can't jab them to come straight back in. But if you are lucky & catch her at the right time they can give her the jab.

Ditto the light thing. Have read lots about this and it appears to work. We stables with nightlights. (Not put up specifically for this purpose I must add)This means that they are never completely dark. Consequently my mare always had her first season in the middle of February.
That's not to say that she will take on her first covering. I wanted an end of March beginning of April foal and I got a 2nd of May foal.
