My partner already has two working gundogs, both brilliant workers. He's had offers of thousands for his best bitch, but he would never part with her. Anyway, he contacted the breeder of this bitch again recently and found out that the chap has just had a litter of pups, of very similar breeding. He is desperate for a pup to train up ready to take over from his older bitch when she slows down. I would quite like to have a go at the field trialing side of things too.

Anyway, we went to look at the pups last night, and they are stunning. We saw mum and dad, and were shown the full pedigrees etc, trophies, pictures, rosettes. Basically this guy is one of the top breeders/triallers/judges in the country. He really knows his stuff.

It should be an easy decision to make - we both want a pup (and both picked the same one out the litter) but taking on a pup is such a huge committment. We already have two labs and a JRT at home. My partner has his own company, so the dogs go to work with him - they are not left at home on their own, so we wouldn't have to worry about that - pup would not be left alone.

This is the website of the breeders http://www.kayteensgundogs.net/ As I said, they are very professional people, and very nice. Our oldest bitch came from them, and has turned into a phenomenal working dog

First of all - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I'm such a sucker for puppies, especially labs, and these are gorgeous!

I see no reason why you shouldn't take on another. You clearly know what you are doing and are aware of how much responsibiltiy is involved. I do think it's a good idea to bring on another dog to replace an older worker. Providing that your OH has time to take the puppy outside very frequently for "potty" training, it should be fine as they will not be on their own. If you know the dogs, the breeder etc and you've already picked out the puppy - talk it over once more to be sure but otherwise go for it.

If you think you have the time and commitment for another working dog and the amount of training it requires then go for it
