Getting a new horse home

Hiya,

What's everyone's routine when you get a new horse to your yard?

Mine is arriving on Saturday at 10am my other mare is in turning the day out at night. My new mare will be stabled next door and I do want to turn them out together. Just want to elemiate as much risk as possible.

I quarantine them for min 10 days, then put them in a small paddock next to their intended field mates for as long as it takes them to be chilled together.
 
I'm on a small private yard where we all have our own fields and do our own thing. My other horse is in during the day and out at night. When my new one arrived 3 weeks ago, we got back with her mid-afternoon and she went in her stable (next door to my other mare) for a few hours and then they were both turned out together that evening as normal. I did stay around to keep an eye on them for a few hours.
The next morning it was normal routine.

I generally do this with everything new.

Did you leave her out all night? My yard is the same as your yard in the sense of own paddock etc thanks

Yep, all night. I probably stayed til about 9pm after turning out at 6pm. All had been fine and quiet so left them to it. 8am the next morning and new mare was lying down asleep and my other horse was standing nearby on watch.

I did exactly the same when I introduced project mare a few months back.
 
Definately quarantine for 2 weeks. You never know what they could have picked up. A new horse came to our yard a year or so back. It infected 2 horses with strangles although all it showed itself was a slightly snotty nose a few days later
 
I dont quarantine personally unless I think there's something up with the horse, I get why people do it of course but it depends on your facilities / set up if you could do it. I can't as I have one small field and my stables lead straight into the field so apart from keeping it seperate in a fenced off corner of the field then the horses could still be near enough to catch whatever it might have!

I usually pop my other horses in the stables for its arrival, stops them tearing around and keeps them quiet while I unload. Then I'd normally let the horse out in the field where it can explore the field and also meet the others over the stable doors. I do that for the day, then usually split the field in half with electric tape and pop it in one side so they can still talk to each other but are kept seperate for a few days. Once they've all settled down a bit and find each other pretty dull I'll let the boss in with it and then the others. I make sure there's plenty of hay around which I find keeps them a bit calmer if they're busy pigging out.
