Getting a passport..where do I start?!

My new boy isn't registered, has no vacc's and no microchip, so I need to get him vacced, microchipped and passported!

This is something I have never had to do before as mine have all had passports so I am just a bit lost as too where to start, I did look on the website for horse passports but I can't find anywhere to actually apply for a form to apply for a passport?

Can anyone help and does anyone know how much it costs? I have heard it's somewhere in the region of £100...

And how would I prove he is mine? I have no written reciept, although I could possibly get one. He has had 2 owners from birth, 3 including myself. He is 2 years and 2 months old.

Oh and I am not sure if it helps, but he is a traditional piebald cob, so perhaps I have to go to the CHAPS?

Download an application from the internet then when the vet comes to chip him, he can fill in the description for you.

I thought Weatherbys only dealt with thoroughbred and the like, where I got that from I don't know!! Thank you for that

If your not sure about anything, maybe give some of the contacts a call.

Registration will vary. You'll have to pay the Passport issuing organising for provining the passport, and also your vet who has to come out to complete parts of the passport application for your individual horse. If he not already, your horse will need a microchip too. It's these extra's that bump the price up as the passport cost itself isn't too bad (about £25 - £35'ish).

I just had a look at the Weatherbys Passports and they are only suitable for a horse that isn't eligible to be registered with a particular breed society.
But obviously Oreo is eligible to join CHAPS, so will have to go through them.

On their page it says you can register your horse with them, is this the same as getting a passport?

'Horse Registration' will mean them providing a passport for him if he hasn't already got one. If he did, but it wasn't a CHAPS one and he was eligible, I expect that would also mean over stamping him to their society too. Meaning he'd be registered with them too, as well as with the original passport issuing organising. Would be necessary if you wanted to show in CHAPS classes.

I'd give CHAPS a call; they're very helpful and will give you all the info you need.

No, you don't HAVE to go with CHAPS just because he's coloured but if you plan on showing him it makes sense to go with them to avoid having to pay extra to overstamp a different passport so that you can show in CHAPS classes. Weatherbys, SHBGB and BHS would still ID passport him as he does not have verified breeding. Please don't use the Horse Passport Agency, they are the least professional with very lax security for updating things like change of owners and so on; might be convenient to do things over internet but you can't beat having a proper stamp in a passport to say it's been checked in their office by a proper person rather than OK'd through internet where nobody knows for sure who is who, IMHO anyway.
If you go CHAPS you'll need to provide 3 photographs of him, one of either side and a head on one as well as a sketch completed by your vet who will need to chip him too.

Thank you very much, this has been really helpful, I would like to show him yes, but will workou the costs too workout whether at this exact moment in time it's better to get any passport rather than a specific breed passport. Too be honest providing I get paid as much as I am due too (my work is shocking at paying me!), then I will go with CHAPS.

I just don't like the fact I have a traditional cob sat in a field with no passport or microchip so want to get this all sorted asap as I keep hearing rumours of plaited manes and tails in the area and due to his breeding, I just cannot risk him not having anything to identify him by.
