Getting a puppy and can't decide on what breed would be best.

My whippet likes the calm and the quiet. A home with children would not suit her at all.

Would avoid the spaniel, too much work, you will be super fit though.

Don't touch British bulldog unless you enjoy giving money to your vet.

Golden retrievers are sweet. Not my cup of tea but best of the bunch for you imo. Or get a nice standard poodle.
 
Some friends of mine have recently adopted a retired racing greyhound. Three kids, the youngest boy is 8 and a complete maniac, middle boy is 12 with Asperger's and eldest is a sensible 14 year old girl. All different needs and energy levels and the dog is brilliant with all of them. Happy to do zoomies with the young maniac, so gentle with the other boy and a happy companion to the girl (and adores the dad!). She's such a sweetheart, lovely manners and very easy to look after.
 
Thanks everyone for your input. After all that a cross breed litter (flat coated retriever/collie/lab) popped up locally and it felt right so we put a deposit down and she will come home after our holiday in August. Our building work is now on hold but I think she will be worth it!
 
When I looked at that picture Grumpymoo I thought, that looks very like a flatcoat. Gorgeous temperament, high energy. I have pup right now, see my post about Sonnet.

Just to add, although not relevant now, I am with Leo about Whippets, not Peter. Mine were always full of fun, up for a game and great with children.
 
Grumpymoo - she is gorgeous! It will be very interesting to see who she takes after most in looks and temperament as she grows up.
 
Keep us updated Grumpmoo, be interesting which parts of the breeding she takes after. Good luck with the first bit, my pup is mad as a hatter this morning, pleased with herself as lasted the whole night with no pees!
 
Out of the 3 you have listed, I'd go for a GR, for laidback family life. If you are worried about hair, choose a show-bred Labrador, instead. They are usually easy-going, good with small children and older ones and make good family pets, being relatively easy to train, although as with all dogs, they need consistency in training.
 
Lovely looking pup! I think sometimes dogs just find us rather than the other way round. Our (now)9 week old pup came by word of mouth just after we had lost our lovely Barney in June. we are a week into owning him and just so pleased to have him. We had spent two years debating what to do regarding a dog following the death of the first of our BTs but had really not come to a conclusion, Stanley just felt destined to be our next dog. I hope you have years and years of fun, do you have a name yet?

We are going to call her Molly, she was meant to be Maddie but when I went back again to see her with my husband we decided that she was definitely a Molly.
