So, hubby has been making a few noises about wanting to get a second dog, and as I've been hoping to get a second for ages, I best make the most of it and strike while the iron is hot :D

We currently have a Ridgeback x Collie (possibley some greyhound in there too), who was a rescue and we would like to get another rescue, but am wondering about what sort of breeds to consider, so would like some suggestions please.

Blue gets about 1.5 to 2hrs excercise per day- at least an hour is off lead. He's quite happy to veg out or have a play in the house. Can get a little OTT when meeting dogs out on a walk, but fine in the house with one (when my mum visits or we visit her, he puts up with mum's jrt x chi rather well considering she hates him ). I think he's love a play mate, so would like one with a similar kind of energy/ play drive as him.

My hubby is quite taken with Weim's and Vislas, I like staffys and lurchers too, but we'd be happy to consider pretty much any breed (except tiny ones only because I'd be worried about Blue accidently hurting one). We're just wanting suggestions so we can do some research before looking, and can make sure we're right for the dog as well as the dog being right for us!

Thanks for reading :)

If you are looking for another rescue there are always loads of Staffs to choose from! Most lurchers I know are rather lazy couch potatoes (interspersed with short bursts of energy).

Pop back to the rescue? There are no limits there. I'd suggest something quite energetic (springer?!) to match Blue's playfulness?

An Italian Spinoni, but then I'm biased! They are great characters will play for ages but also likes to sleep, they also need a good walk or two a day. You dont find too many rescues dogs though.

Depends on temperament. Two of mine are easy, one hard, but he was deliberately picked for being the naughtiest!

How can you call this nuts?!

Zola (brothers) is working bred, has no off switch when out, runs till she drops, nuts! Obedient, but has the self preservation of a suicidal pigeon! Bit of a poppet at home.

Thank you for all of your replies everyone, I'll try to answer you all!

Yes, it's so sad that there are so many staffs in resuces, and even more so that they are so unwanted :( I think they are lovely, just a shame many of them end up being owned by numpties. Does anyone have any thoughts on the temperment/ trainability of staffies? I'm willing to put time and effort in to train them.

The rescue we got Blue from is rather small and only have a couple of dogs in at the moment, although we will be contacting them to let us know when they have anything suitable. I quite like springers, although hubby is not so sure- according to him, they can have lots of ear problems  (am happy to be told this is not the case!).

I think I've only see those in breed books. Sounds like they'd match Blue's energy. As you say, I don't think I'll find many in rescue, but one to put on my list to reserch- thank you :)

What area are you in OP? Maybe someone could suggest a good rescue centre local to you.
I'm in Hampshire, Basingstoke area.

I love golden retrievers, they can be very energetic when they want to be.
Oh yes, I like retrievers too, know a couple and they are lovely although haven't seen their energetic side yet lol.

Thanks for all your input everyone, much appreciated and more welcome :D

We rehomed a 2 year old staffy x back in October. Who had had virually no training or socialising at all. She was terrified of a lot of things. We took her into the vets for a check up a week after we got her and she threw herself on the floor shaking.

She has already learnt so sit, stay wait for a treat or feed till we let her. Not to stare at us eating or steal or food. She can me left without peeing or pooing due to her separation issues. She will come back if you let her off the lead. Can retrieve her toy back to us. She used to run off with it and chew it. She has at last stopped stealing Millies toys off her when were out. She is now fine at the vets. She has stopped pulling on the lead most the time or standing up on her back legs out on walks. Also she used to bark and have a got at anyone coming to the house. Now she loves people coming round and is happy going to the vets.

She learnt all than since October so they are a smart breed and dog and she enjoys learning, espeically when there's food!!

We still have a lot more work to do with her. Mainly socialising with dogs and I only let her off the field in the field we go in a lot.

I would definatly reconmend them as a breed.

Never had ear problems but I do regular checks.

You might want to decide what you want then start looking. If you have a specific breed in mind, email the breed rescues.

All the staffies I know are adorable, saw tons today at a county show, all lovely and nose to nose with my boy that I took up.
