Getting a second opinion - vet protocol

Do I ask my vets to refer my horse to another practice or do I tell them that's what I want?

I would prefer not to move the horses completely to the other practice as I'm out of their area for the routine stuff, so I would like this just to be a referral / second opinion - but I obviously don't want to upset future working relationships.

It is polite to tell your vet you are seeking a second opinion as the new vets will contact original vets for notes anyway but it is up to you who you contact for your 2nd opinion

I am moving my horse to another vets entirely because I am so disappointed with their service, and I do want a second opinion in relation to his injury last year... I hadn't really thought about how I would communicate that to them to be honest!! I will probably email them and explain....

I would speak with the vet directly and tell them that I want x to look at the horse then that's what would happen .
If I did know who I wanted to take the second look I would say let's get someone else to take a look who would be best .

I would just inform them tbh, my main everyday Vet has never had any issues when I have taken a horse to a different practice for referral.

You are their client and you are paying them, they are not doing you a favour. I'm not saying be confrontational, you want what is best for your horse and would like another Vets opinion, simple.

Talking to someone who has no history with the horse made me realise how coloured the existing vet's view is. To her my mare is "difficult" & "lazy", taking the P. To the new vet she sounds like a horse with a pain issue somewhere.
