Getting a shetland to work on lunge

I have been working my daughters shetland on the lunge while she doesnt ride him and he is so sluggish

.He is so lazy behind doesnt track up just shuffles until you realy get after him then wizzes around
Has anyone got any ideas on things i could do to get him going better

i asked a similar question on hear recently as i am trying to back my shetland. the replies i got suggested long reining is much better for shetland as it keeps their interest better!

Our shetland has weekly long reining lessons, you can work them so much better and make it more interesting for them, he is brill at it now. He has been doing it for about a year and has just started doing grids and has got a right little pop in him. I'm going to try and get some photo's soon. With long reining you can drive them from behind and get them working, if we put him on the lunge he either zooms round or trys to roll

Pepper has perfected eating at a canter on the lunge and you can't lunge her inthe school as she spends the whole time on her back wriggling gleefully. Lunging her is a bit like nailing jelly to the ceiling actually!!
