Hi i passed my driving test after 1997 so i cant tow a trailer on my licence.
I am based on Cheshire and was wondering how i go about getting it on my licence, what do i have to do ? roughly how much will it cost ? And can people teach you with L plates on ?
Sorry about all the questions havent got a clue about it and really want to do it so i can get out and about with my little lad.
Thanks Guys

i did my test in the spring.
the test costs £89 (i think, if i remeber correctly) and i had seven lessons, from a registered instructor- found him in the yellow pages. These cost £25 a time. Definitely worth while, as he got me up to speed
I also went out and practised with my mum, my towing with L plates on, and this is perfectly legal. we practised reversing alot. in the test you have to reverse, couple up, and then do an hours drive on the roads, like a normal driving test.
You can also tow with L plates on, with a horse in the back, as long as you have a legal driver with you.
Good luck, we found it not as expensive as we expected.

Sorry you are wrong it is illegal to tow a trailer with a horse in it if the combination exceeds 3.5 ton MAM. DSA ADI Grade 6 Instructor. and LGV Instructor. As for cost 2 days training plus hire of 4X4 & horsebox for test £380 www.topshamdrivertraining.co.uk

who is wrong? i dont understand sorry if i am just being blonde.

I did my test last Autumn. I failed the first one so it worked out quite expensive, but I was lucky in that driving instructor lives opposite so didn't have to go too far. I would recommend lessons first then get out practising with an empty trailer.
There are lots of people who can tow a trailer but not that many who have done the test so it's not quite the same as sticking your L plates on when learning to drive a car. I found it really important to have the lessons first so you're not learning other people's bad habits.
Also I didn't tow with the horse until I'd passed my test. You have to drive a lot faster on the test than you would with the horse in, so I didn't want to get used to being too slow!

1st find an instructor who teaches the B+E category.
2nd book lessons
3rd have plenty of practice with the instructor
4th take the test (mine was about £85 i think)
5th go out and have fun with your lad.

the test is pretty simple - you have to do
a) what is basically a reverse park with the trailer (same manoeuvre as in a car but no others around, just a yellow box to put the trailer into),
b) a 'controlled stop' (like an emergency stop, but not on the road, and not as harsh and only from 20mph)
c) answer a few questions about the car/trailer (i got how do you know if the doors are shut properly - duh, you go check!)
d) about an hours driving around the local area including dual carriage ways or motorways if available, town traffic and hill starts.
e) an unhitch and re-hitch manoeuvre - pull up, un hitch, park the car beside the trailer, pull forward, reverse up and hitch the trailer up again. (they are looking for procedure rather than how quick you do it)

it's pretty simple, it's just the nerves that make it seem difficult. a good instructor will go over and over and over the reversing with you until you are happy that you can do it with no help.

I did a 3 day intensive course last November with the test on the 3rd day for just under £700. Would highly recommend it - it gave me the training and the confidence I needed for me to pass with ease!

Would definately recommend lesson with a proper instructor though as they know all the ins and outs of the test.

Good luck!!

it's now £105 for the test (gone up

and you can tow with L-plates and a horse on board - the DVLA have confirmed this. i have got my trailer and am having lessons with my dad at the moment and also just reversing round our car park when i get time. got an intensive day booked at the end of the month for £240 and will then see at the end of that how much more am likely to need before doing test.
