Getting back a loan pony when loanee not answering/returning calls

Please help - I don't know what to do! About a week ago I posted on here about my pony that was out on loan - the loanee told me she had started rearing and was refusing to load (totally out of character) and that they no longer wanted her. I said that was fine, and that I would go and get her, just give me a week to sort out somewhere for her to go.

Anyway, one of my friends knew of someone looking for a loan pony. They agreed to take on Willow and everything looked to be great. Now I can't seem to get hold of the people that currently have her on loan!

I have phoned them loads, left lots of messages and they never call back. I have managed to get her to answer the phone twice (by with holding number) but she just says she is busy and will call me back later, then hangs up. I have sent her texts saying that I need the pony back, and that we will come and get her - she doesn't even have to be there, just leave her things out etc, but no response.

I would just go and get pony, but I have now found out that they have moved the pony without my permission/knowledge and I only have the name of the village where she is now kept - Anstey near Bishops Stortford.

If I don't hear anything from them by the weekend, we are considering just going down there with the trailer and driving around the roads looking in fields for pony.

It seems strange to me that a week ago this was a supposed devil pony that wasn't worth a penny, and now she is being funny about giving it back! My partner thinks that she was just trying to get me to sell her the pony for a stupidly low price, or that she has already sold the pony on and now is trying to get out of a tough situation.

What would others do? And does anyone live near Anstey that could help me out with where pony might be?
 
I have to agree with you - hitch up trailer and go looking for her, i wouldn't even give them a few days grace TBH by that time she could be moved again.

Google/yellow pages every yard in the area and ring up until you find her.

I'd just go and get her ASAP!
Especially if you're worried that she may have sold the pony on.
Is there any other contact you have of her ie, some of her friends? Could others at her old yard know where she's gone.

Try looking in phonebook / electoral roll for a home address and go to the house? She can't fob you off if you're standing in front of her. Maybe I'm a bit naive but I always look for the best possible scenario. She's probably changed her mind and is scared of losing the pony now.
 
i no bishops stortford i can ask some peops if u want dont no anstey that well to be honest if u need a hand let me no i have nothing to do all day ( well i do but looking for a stolen pony is more fun!)
 
I deffo wouldn't hang about, she's already moved your po once; I'd be worried she'll keep moving.

Hitch up your trailer asap and get your lil po back, good luck!

do you have a formalloan agreement in writing wih them? Put in writing to them that you require the pony back & state why, if you do have a formal agreement then state the termination agreement within it. if not state clearly that you are conserned that pony has been moved without consent & that you require the full addres of where now kept & a date for returning of pony within a set time frame or you shall be seeking legal advice.
dont be threatening or rude just to the point, best bet i to send recorded so they cannot deny receiving it.
do you still have passport? if not contact the issuing authority & see it anyone has updated details , likewise if branded/chipped ect contact those too.
also inform local horsewatch that horse has gone missing whilst on loan (they are fantastic with this sort of thing)

Hi, you need to pick up your pony as soon as you can find her. Preferably today. If she really wouldn't load, she shouldn't have been able to be moved. Was her original loan home a distance away from where you live?

Don't go alone. I had to be accompanied by burly assistants, and a friendly policeman who made a phone call to them in order retrieve my schoolmaster a number of years ago.

Poor you, hope you get some good news soon!
 
Don't wait til the weekend, get the trailer hitched up and go and get your pony back now! You should have been on the door step the minute they stopped answering the phone and behaving oddly.

Is it local to you? If not maybe some friendly HHOers could see if they can spot her so you can pin down exactly where she is.
 
i'd be hitching the trailer up and chucking a set of bolt croppers in the truck and be setting off to get my pony back
tbh i would even break in to get it back because they dont have a leg to stand on if they have "stolen" the pony by withholding it from the correct owner. although havin said i'd only break locks off if i couldnt speak to the person who owns the field/yard where she is kept!

Do you have the passport or do they have it? I would second speaking to the PIA. When I put my horse out on loan, the WPCS have a form you should fill in (they are his PIA) to say that the horse is out on loan, how long it is out for, who loans it and basically that they won't make any changes to the details of ownership without something in writing from the owner. If you didn't do anything like this then call them now and tell them the horse has been stolen while out on loan so they need to be aware that they shouldn't change the ownership details.

Is the pony microchipped or freezemarked? I would call the Police and register the pony as stolen, with freezemark number, and second the bit about local Horsewatch.
 
Agree with all - get out there and get her back asap - if you have a formal loan contract get a letter to them asap. I know when I had my boy on loan the official 'notice period' was a month ut there was a clause in there that said if owner was concerned about welfare she could remove him immediately - I think by moving her without your permission you could definately justify concerns!
 
As others have said I would get myself over there asap. Sounds like she's trying to pull a fast one and it all sounds very odd indeed that, if she didn't want the pony she isn't on the phone to you making sure you are coming to pick it up if it's soooo badly behaved!!!

That is VERY scary. i hate stories like this, it makes me worry that my horse's owner will decide to come and take her back, even though there is no cause for her to do so!

I would echo all the others who have said go and look for your pony TODAY, if at all possible. Is Bishops Stortford far from you? I would start at the yard your horse was last at, the loanee might have mentioned to people there where she was moving to. Failing that, i would call in at the local tack shops, explain the situation and see if anyone knows of yards in Anstey that you could try.

Do you have a loan agreement? If yes, does it include informing you about moving pony? I guess it would.
I agree with those who say go to house if you have address (guess you would have this). Try to sort out properly. Agree also with those who say contact horsewatch. Don't go on your own.
If all this fails, then I would say try to find pony - try to speak to person face to face. If all else fails, try to get pony back.
 
If you have a clause that says cannot be moved without your consent then I would report as stolen and go find her. They have broken the loan agreement and as such you should be able to get her back immediately.
 
go get her, i had this happen to me, thankfully loanee hadn't pulled a fast one but had lost her phone (she only had a mobile) I went straight donw and found my horse.

Yes, had a loan agreement, and clause that said must be notified if moved.

They have had her for almost two years, so not like I don't know them, and they have been fine in past. I have some burly chaps to help me

Also they are fairly well known, daughter has ridden at HOYS and Olympia.

Update - just typing this and she called me!! Apparently yard does not have an address, but she has given me a description of where it is. We're off to get her! Thanks for all your advice!
 
I grew up there and used to keep my horse there - may be able to help?

ETA: Oops - didnt read your last reply - good luck, there are only a couple of places so you should find easily enough.
