All being well with his final vetting on Friday, I will be getting back on the ginger monster this weekend after a 3 month break due to injury.

I am starting to get a bit nervous about the whole thing (not a great start, I know!). Generally Fin tends to surprise me in that he will behave impecably when I expect him to be a numpty, but catch me out when I am off my guard

Anyone got any tips/lovely stories about how their horse was perfect to remount after a lay-off? Please no horror stories!!!

I remounted mine 2 weeks ago after a 4 month break! Have to admit I didn't pick the best conditions, it was dusk and really windy!!

She was a bit spooky at first and I probably shouldn't have picked a windy day (she hates the wind) but she soon settled and walked round the arena for 20 mins.....

Advice? Pick a day with decent weather, don't do too much, and don't rush... keep to a walk as spooks much easier to handle should one happen, and have someone on the ground also. I also found it helped to have a friend riding in the school at the same time, but then my mare can be a bit silly....

I have to say she has been a little angel ever since, but I don't push it. Windy rainy days are out, and so is hacking on my own.... They need a bit of confidence too...... Good luck

It's not the 1st ride you have to worry about it's the 2nd and 3rd

My horse had 8 weeks of over the summer, I got straight back on and took him for a gentle hack, he was his normal self

He got worse before he got better though but he didn't do anything awful, just more spooking, napping etc then normal!

if i can, anyone can! i am a major wimp and i got back on my mare after 8 months after a bad fall. spent weeks worrying about it then one day, on the yard by myself, saw her in the field and thought its now or never. got her in, tacked her up, major butterflies and shaking so she must have known i was terrified, walked her into menage and hauled myself into saddle ( broke my knee and was still abit sore so not easy to get on ) and it was FAB! felt absolutely fantastic, nerves disappeared in 10 mins and i was trotting happily round the area with a massive smile on my face, best feeling in the world because i knew straight away i was going to love my riding again

. I called my mum to tell her and she immediately burst into tears!

it really is just the thought of it all which is scary, once you're back in the saddle its like you've been riding every day.

Good luck and enjoy!!

Ah, thanks everyone! That's made me feel a lot better. Luckily I have a lovely friend to catch me, but hopefully it won't be necessary!

Someone else actually warned me it would be worse the 2nd/3rd times, I will definitely be keeping the body protector on for a few days!
